Well, I'm not in university yet, but it couldn't be any worse than high school ^^ My reasons: 1) I get to choose what I study 2) I guess there's a general sense of freedom (of expression and whatnot) in university that is really hard to come by in high schools (god forbid the student body actually got any say in what goes on in the school =_=) 3) It's too big for serious, school-wide gossip (the curse of high schools) 4) FLEX TIME means I get to sleep in till 9 5) And of course, all the oportunities to travel abroad and learn and discover yourself, meet new people ^_^ I can't wait!

The best thing about university is the freedom. It is sort of like owning your own small business: you can take it easy and not do that much work, but then you won't do so well; or you can do the required work and do as well as you possibly can. It takes a little while, but eventually you will find the optimal amount of work you need to do such that you do as little work as possible while doing as well as you possibly can. I've learned that reading the textbook or course notes after lectures (weeks before the next exam) is a waste of time (for me), so I don't do that. A busy week for me is any week where I have more than 25 hours of work (including class time). If I stay up too late the night before, then I can choose to sleep through my morning class. If I want to make a three-day weekend, I can choose to skip my two Monday classes. If I don't want morning classes, I can try my hardest to avoid them during course schedule-making time.
I guess one of the other things I like about university is that it is a true academic setting: people are here to learn. In high school, a good chunk of the people were there simply to get their diploma and be done with school. It was "uncool" to talk about anything academic. While I was waiting in line at Timmy's the other day, my roommate and I were talking about a difficult practice question we needed to know for an upcoming exam. The person standing behind us (who we did not know at all) began giving her input, and all three of us eventually worked out the problem. It is nice knowing that other people are truly interested in the stuff that you are also interested in.

I loved high school, but not the teachers.
University is better - more free time - go out a lot more after you turn 19 - be away from home - meet new people

yeahhhh university is definitely better.... in highschool it was all just too easy. I spent the first year of my post secondary degree abroad, as far away from home and familiarity that I could get (with an awesome drinking age) and it was the greatest experience ever... u have to learn stuff quickly, like how to manage on your own, control finances and all that, but it is totally worth it..
as for procrastination... well... if you thought it was bad in highschool.. it's definitely a major part of university life. u just learn how to get stuff done in spite of it and still have an amazing time

I agree whole heartedly. University kicks high school's butt. Not only do you generally have fewer hours of class per week/ per day, but you also get to focus on what you want to learn rather than having to follow a curriculum that you have no interest in.

University is a lot of fun. Though it is quite different from high school. It's quite the big adjustment. It took me a few months or so before I got used to it. We do get to pick make up our own class schedules which gives us more flexible time. Most of the exams are multiple choice which can take a while to get used to especially if you are not used to that kind of format. If you choose to live in rez, you meet so many people and you get to know some of the people quite well because you basically live with the same people for the school year. For sure, you will have a lot more independence and are able to make your own choices. There's also so many clubs and sports teams to join. There's also a lot of extra events that go on like movie night and different activities.

I like college MUCH more, I always reccamend to those who didn't further their education after Highschool to go to college/university because it's soo different, and so much better. People there, want to be there. And the education is so much more Rich because you're learning specifically what you want to and there for enjoy it. It's been a great experience for me, better then i thought it would be

lady2sweet wrote:High school, the work is not as hard of course but at least the exams isn't worth as much. In high school the max. is 30% while in University its about 10 to 15 percent more. If you're from Alberta you're used to exams being worth a major portion of your mark. In most of my classes i have an in class final worth about 15% of my grade and the final exam worth 50% of my grade. So I'm used to that sort of stress at least. I'm excited for University though. I would imagine it'll be a nice change after 4 drama bs years of high school.

I LOVED it when I was in high school.. Each year I thought that the year I was in was the best one so far. Then university comes.. and it's even better! It is true that I always think right now is the best moment of my life, but still..
Even more choices for courses, a lot of smart people, many different types of people, flexibility, more activities to get involved in, and, in my case, getting some work experience doing co-op is good, too. I thought there were too many high school courses that I wanted to take, and now.. there are like way more courses I want to take in univ. Also, b/c of the variety of courses you can take, and also in part b/c of the flexible nature of my program, you can be really different from other people. Even within the program, there are different areas I can dig more into. I personally like the idea of being 'unique', so that's another really good thing about univ.
WRT someone's comment about not getting enough attention from the prof, or not being able to get the help b/c a lot of ppl will be after it, it all depends on you. Like someone else said, there won't usually be any lineups to see the prof during the office hour. Most of the times you can even make appointment with the prof outside of his/her office hour. I even know someone who went to see one of the profs for help frequently, and later ended up helping him on his research. I believe he was just in his first year when he did that.

I agree! Espeacially if your someone like me who HAAATTTEEED high school. I came from a small town and moved to a city uni. There are so many new opportunities available that I had no idea about. Mostly the kids who had the information for different opportunitites available to people at my highschool were pretty much teachers kids. It was awful. But life i better now.

No, TAs for sure. They know the material just as well as the prof (and, in some cases, better than the prof), and helping confused or inquisitive students understand the material is what they are assigned to do. Depending on the size of the class, there is probably more than one TA and they tend to have more time on their hands than profs, so meeting with a TA tends to be easier to do than meeting with the prof. Profs also tend to get lost in learned simplicity: they most likely think what they are teaching is incredibly simple, whereas TAs just consider it simple. TAs are more likely to associate with your understanding/misunderstanding because they were you just a few years ago, and they will, therefore, be better tutors.
