Wrong MIT. This MIT is, i'm assuming, a program at UWO.

UWO is in the topic so it's clearly not MIT in the states. Plus there's MTP and MPI after it - read carefully. So there's like two actual MITers that posted here frown

Technoculture ;)

In fact technoculture isn't even a real word. But when you future MITers get to western you'll learn that little quirks like that are what make MIT such a unique program. Trust me, you'll know what I'm talking about when you get here ;)

I just finished my first year of MIT so if you have any questions feel free to throw them my way

1. How do these so-called quirks make MIT unique?
2. Any courses you recommend?
3. How challenging is it?
4. We're definitely better than the biomed kids. Oh wait, that's not a question. smile

Ok sorry about the insanely long response, but I love MIT so much I couldn't stop writing haha ... here goes..

1. How many programs do you know of that have made up words in their name? Exactly, none. How many faculties have comic books as assigned textbooks? Or have lectures based on social networking in Facebook? Or show you that you, and probably everyone else you know, is actually a cyborg? Only MIT. You’ll see what I mean when you get here. FIMS is a small faculty with a student body that is honestly one of a kind. Trust me, you will LOVE being an MIT kid.

2. Well I didn’t personally take this class but almost every first year MIT kid takes film 1020E (formerly film 020E). Since alot of MIT kids take it it will be easy to network, create study groups and split up the readings you fell behind on when exam time rolls around. I heard that this class is also complimentary to one of the MIT classes you are required to take in first year. For a science credit (which you need unfortunately) a good half course is compsci 1033 (formerly compsci 033). I took this and we learned about photoshop, dreamweaver, audacity and other multimedia programs ... not too science-y. Plus the course content mirrored the things I was learning in one of my MIT classes. This was really helpful when I studied for exams since alot of the course content was the same.

3. It isn’t incredibly difficult, but you are required to think critically and draw your own conclusions. Profs and TAs love organized yet original thinking. This can be alot harder than you think. But MIT is definitely not the bird course that other faculties at western perceive us to be. At this point I know quite a few people who didn’t get the grades to make it into second year MIT. FIMS is supposed to cut out alot of first year MIT students ( I don’t know the exact numbers) so you do need to work hard to stay in this program.

4. Your statement isn’t quite correct. We’re definitely better than ALL of the other kids ;). You won’t find a faculty like this at western or any other school. Seriously, MIT is a fab choice ... you won’t regret it smile

Sounds sweet. I'm glad we need a science credit, actually. Science can be fun too (that's the asian in me speaking). I'm thinking of astronomy (the universe is awseome) or basic biology (since I've already done bio 12 - easy credit) along with that compsci course. As long as math isn't required, I'm good.

We're all cyborgs? Can't wait to hear how that's explained. I'm definitely intrigued now, thanks smile

Stumbled across this post. I also just finished my first year of MIT (and am anxiously awaiting my decision for MTP! Yikes.)

Things you should realize before going in - it can be pretty hard to get good marks in this program. But don't worry, it's not impossible. Plus, you may find yourself pretty bored with the first year courses. Alas, the best is yet to come (or so they tell me.) The upper year courses seem way cooler. I'm not trying to scare you away, just be prepared. Film is a great class, I'd recommend it, as well as computer science multimedia (easiest course of the year, plus it counts as a mandatory science credit.)

Sorry if I'm throwing too much at you - feel free to completely ignore this. MIT is the coolest faculty on campus (and everyone knows it!) and it's awesome to be part of a small, eye opening faculty. Embrace your frosh week - I know many of your soph leaders and they are awesome. Be excited - you definitely made the right choice.
