Do any current Western students know around what time we can start registering for SAOs is? I really wanna get first jump on it so I can get my appointment sooner, and have more flexibility in my schedule. The website just says May, so are we talking mid-May or end of May after everyone has accepted?

They just updated it on their site. The earliest we can book appointments for our SAO appointment is May 26th. https://studentservices.uwo.ca/secure/SAO/onlineRegistration.html Richard Ivey HBA 2012

I'd say since you're in Calgary, it would be more economical to phone, since flying would involve, plane tickets, hotel, taxi etc. Unless you're a person that feels the need to be physically present at things like this. I know I would prefer actually being there if possible, just so I can make sure all things are going as I planned.

What is the purpose of the SAO?
is this for course registration and such? I have not even received faculty packages and information on course registration as to date.
can some one please provide me with the necessary information.

SAO is when you register for your courses, get your Western ID card, pay tuition(optional at that time) and other administrative stuff. You can either do it at the campus or by phone, but it is organized as appointments, so you have to register and will be given a date and time. Registration begins May 26th on the website. https://studentservices.uwo.ca/secure/SAO/onlineRegistration.htmlObviously if your doing it over the phone though, you won't be getting your ID card and other stuff that would require you to physically be there, but you won't be penalized for it, and it can be taken care of when you move into rez or during frosh week. I don't think anyone has gotten faculty packages and all that yet though, I figure they'd send that out after May 26th when everybody's decision is finalized.

Yeah, the only thing you miss out on is the ID card. Like the second day of being in residence (the first day will be too hectic), a soph (second-year student who lives in residence) will take you to the place where you can get your ID card. Unless you have money to throw around (and you want something semi-exciting to do during the summer), then it is definitely not necessary to go to SAO. I opted out of going simply so I could do my course registration as soon as possible (... I think my SAO date was later on, and I didn't want to get stuck with a crapload of morning classes).

I love to be there for these things and check out the school, but it's totally a waste of money considering how I'll be going to UWO regardless of whether or not I show up to SAO in person.
Has anybody done registration over the phone? Is it clear and easy to communicate your wants? I'm just scared there will be a confusion or mix-up
@mynameismattgotmlgo: if I don't go to SAO, does that mean phone registration is even earlier? To me, it seems more logical that SAO will come before phone. Of course, if I can register earlier then phone is the better choice.

You don't actually do the course registration over the phone; you do it over the internet (by yourself I think)... I can't remember if I did my course registration before or after I received the phone call, but I know I didn't need any help whatsoever (the rep just called and asked me if I was able---I'm guessing I got called after I had finished the registration---to do it all). The course registration thing is really easy to use, so I don't think you will have any problems. If you do online registration, you can get a registration date in late June (there are like three or four days available for all first years; which date you get will be assigned to you by the registrar). This could be well before your SAO date, so it is definitely beneficial to do the online registration.
To anyone else reading this - yes, you can do online registration first AND still go to SAO. Doing this you can get the best of both worlds, and I strongly recommend doing it. If you somehow mess up the course registration, the SAO person will pick up on it and make the necessary changes.

oh that sounds fantastic, online would be easy for me to do. but if i complete my online registration, i can still request to have phone registration too right? just in case i made some stupid mistake i'm sure a person on the phone would catch it.

I think he meant that the online registration IS the phone registration. How would I go about setting up a phone/online registration, and also setting up an actual SAO visit? That really sounds like what I'd want to do. The luxury of being among the first to choose, and also not missing out on the things I could pick up by actually being there.

Yeah, I can't remember if I could have a representative check over or help me with the online registration, but my guess is that is what they are there to do.
bigbadsheep, I don't remember exactly how (all I remember is that it is possible)... I don't even remember how I found out which person to email about not going to SAO (and thus doing online registration), but find that person with the resources you have available and ask him or her about that.

^ Sure I got the same thing as you, since I did get all that info, but I've never read it through thoroughly enough to figure out how to get a phone registration along with actually going there, I didn't even know that was an option. I'm gonna re-read the books tomorrow, and see if I can figure it out, or else send out an email to my contact in admissions.
