I was recently rejected from UBC Commerce. I applied with a 93% average and a pretty descent supplement (lots of volunteer). I've worked very hard all year and it bugs me so much when i see people with lower averages who got accepted while i didnt even make the waitlist. worry I'm sure they have their reasons for rejecting me but it honestly feels like i've wasted my whole year of hard work. sigh~

Lots of volunteer work could end up counting for nothing. When I was talking to an Ivey recruiter they said you can have all the Ecs you want. but in the end it comes down to how committed you are to them, and whether you show leadership potential. The point of all this is to try to eliminate those people who just like to hit the books and lack the necessary social skills. If you fall into that category, then theres your answer.

well, I wouldnt say i'm anti-social. I have plenty of friends and I've joined clubs and teams at my school as well. For my "most significant leadership experience", I put down that I've been a webmaster before. As far as the fact that commerce programs seek "well rounded individuals" goes, I was already aware of that from the beginning. Also, I didnt apply to a lot of universities mainly because i wanted to stay local. Though it kinda came back to bite me in the behind, i only have about 2 options left; SFU commerce or UBC Arts. A girl I know who was from student gov't and had a very high average (maybe higher than me) was rejected from UBC Comm but got into Queens Comm... that's kinda messed up if u asked me.

I have a friend who is facing exactly the same problem. He wants to get into engineering in UBC but can't because his average is only 82% in first semester. But he has other reasons and gave UBC a doctor's note saying that he was really sick last semester.

I would suggest to go into UBC Arts and then you can easily transfer later. Coz that option is the easiest looking at your situation.

Sorry to know that you rejected though. Don't worry, I know how it feels...But just remeber, everything happens for good.

They could be trying to become more geographically well-rounded by setting a cap on the number of students from BC that could be accepted into Sauder. Just a theory, but I can't really understand how somebody with a 93% average gets rejected from a program like that.

Im from Ontario and got rejected with a 90 average. Lots of sports teams(incl varsity), MVP, volunteer, Model UN, student mentor etc etc. I also got into UBC arts and SFU commerce (as well as several Ontario commerce programs and Dalhousie) . Probably planning to go to UBC arts and then maybe transfer. Anyone know how hard that is? I was also surprised that I am not on a waiting listworry

Tamago,

can you please say what courses you took? What other grades did UBC take a glance at? There must be something obvious that is wrong with your transcript (no offense) because it is really hard to take the fact that they rejected someone with 93 per average.

Okay, to calculate my mark, UBC takes my top 4 provincially examinable courses (provincial exams are only for BC i think) anyways, here were the courses i self reported...

Geography 12 - 87%
English 12 - 100%
Japanese 12 - 94%
Math 12 - 93%
Physics 12 - 86%

The courses that were used to calculate my average when i reported my marks were for english, geo, japanese and math. So my average was 93.5%
UBC commerce is known for rejecting people with averages beyond 95% (believe it or not) The success of admission is more on the basis of your extra curricular and leadership skills as opposed to purely high marks. I'm planning on seeing an adviser to clear things up a bit.

haha right on XD although geography turned out to be the biggest mistake i've ever made... thinking it would just be a smooth ride, I ended up getting the most satanic teacher ever... >_< I think in my class of 30, only about 5 made it above 86%

anyways, I applied for the commerce program at UBC, it's also called the sauder school of business.

That's such BS. BC again proves my point it is a worthless province.

Or they just had a teacher who is willing to give out really high marks?

I'd rather just stereotype the entire province based on a few things..

A girl who is getting 71% in my Chem class got 97% in English last semester in BC...
I think they're mistaking English for Gym or something because the marks belong to a gym class.
