My high school's valedictorian was also based solely on marks. Normally they only take one person, the one with the highest average, but in the case of my year, I tied pretty much to the decimal point with another guy and we both got it (so we did our speech together). We also have a salutatorian. Teachers nominate students that have been very involved throughout the years (they pick two students, I think) and then the students vote on them (so that one's basically a popularity contest).

ok reading all the posts in this forumid rather have a class valedictorian that the student population wants then some IB nerd that never was an active member of the school and spended their highschool time buried in their books dont get me wrong not all ib kids are like that.... usually people that are nominated by the students are all around athletes get along with everyone and smart so defintely a good choice also in my cousin school it was based on marks and some foreign exchanged student got it and he wrote his speech on the metaphorsis of a caterpillar it was hellla bring and it sounded like some biology research paper instread of highlighting schools memories honestly i would rather hear the "dr seuss" speech than that he was also boasting on how he got accepted to yale

I finished second in the valedictorian voting. Blah. Some drama geek ended up winning because he was lobbying for votes. And apparently, my speech would have too many "big words", so the moral of the story is, if your school is mostly dumb, just act like them if you want to become valedictorian. Getting 90's or being actively involved in the community won't make a difference, at least at my school (seems like it's almost frowned upon).

I think it's a better system to have both a valedictorian and a salutatorian... So that people that work hard to get high marks get recognition, but it isn't a popularity contest, and there's still someone to represent the student population.

My school has a form that students must fill out if they are interested in becoming the valedictorian. Requirements: endorsement by 5 teachers and 20 students(they cannot endorse anyone but that one person), and at least a 70% average. Those names end up on a ballot. Students and staff vote on the best candidate.
This year, our valedictorian is a girl who is a star player on the basketball team, has an 85+ avg, helps run many clubs/associations, and gets along with just about anyone.

At my school they let the students vote, but it's kind of pointless because if they don't like who the students pick they just overrule it.

I just got the ballot today for valedictorian. I believe you just have to get the most votes, but if it is someone how never goes to school, the teachers would likely pick the next one, but it is the students for the most part who decide. We also let the runnier up get some glory, they get to annonce the valedictorian (introduce them) at commencement.

the teachers nominate students who have high academic standing, are actively involved in school activities, and are good public speakers then their names are announced to everyone, and all the grade 12s get to vote. this year there are 4 candidates.

It's not as easy as most people think.. I guess caucasians don't think highly of it, but asians know it's a pretty big deal over there. I would consider soccer my top sport though. I'm not great at anything, I just play a lot of different sports. hence the emphasis on sports in my ECs . Queen's Commerce '12

did they do that deliberately (one of the two has to be a female, and the other must be a male) or is that just by coincidence?

We've already voted like a week ago (still no results). I think my school needs more time to burn some votes and rig the election.
