myst wrote:how does the wlu bba program compare with mcmaster's business and western's bmos programs in terms of pursuing the CA designation or accounting in general? well i'm almost certain about this, and correct me if i'm wrong but i think that the western program does not give you all the 51 credits.. i did not do as much research on this so don't quote me on it. As for McMaster commerce, it's not exactly the best program out there for CA, and i'm saying that for a couple of reasons. First of all, there is no co-op for the first three years, and then u have a straight 12 month long co-op term. That might work for some peole, but its kinda better to work 4 months.. study and then work again because this way you can u have hands on experience as u learn. But, my dad is a CA, and i've heard that they are getting in new professors and everything is new for the accounting program starting this year, so no one really knows much. I have nothing against Mac (I got accepted there too) but if you put mac and WLU side by side, personally I would choose WLU.. I've heard that even Brock's accounting program is REALLY good as well.

WLU BBA (Accounting Stream) is one of only three programs in Canada guaranteed to get you the credits you need to become a CA. As for recruiting, the Big 4 recruit heavily at WLU as do boutique firms. WLU is known for great scores of the EUFE exam and are consistently the top performers on that exam. I'm not going into accounting but it is likely the strongest aspect of the WLU BBA degree. I can't comment on the BMOS or McMaster Business program but I would wager WLU is probably better in terms of recruiting and the way it prepares students for a CA designation. That said, I would go to the school where you would be the happiest at. Becoming a CA isn't super difficult or competitive and there's no reason Western or McMaster can't help you achieve that goal.

What can you do with a business degree? There are thousands of different opportunities. Here are the different specializations at WLU: # Accounting # Brand Communication # Entrepreneurship # Finance # Financial Planning # Human Resource Management # Insurance and Risk Management # Marketing # Supply Chain Management That's just a taste of what you can do. There are tons of jobs within each one of those disciplines.

Check out Wikipedia. Brand Communication is a type of marketing. Basically it entails getting your target audience to recognize a brand and associate it with the qualities you want. For example, Nike wants their brand to appeal to athletes and they want people to think of quality equipment and superstar athletes like Tiger Woods and LeBron James.

Well there are sources I've found that say it's got one of the top five undergrad commerce programs in canada, so that's a pretty significant factor. I lived in Ottawa for three years and visit there every year so I'm really familiar with the city, and I've got family there which is good for a nice Sunday dinner. I also felt really comfortable with the campus, which is obviously important as well.
I'm still trying to decide though, but I am leaning towards Ottawa.

I'm still trying to decide though, but I am leaning towards Ottawa. I think you are greatly mistaken. Ottawa does not have one of the top five Undergrad Commerce program in Canada. 1. Queens Commerce 2. McGill Commerce 3. UofT Commerce 4. Dalhousie Commerce 5. UBC Commerce **All of which rank better than Ottawa's Program. Don't get me wrong, Ottawa is a good school, but a long shot from the Top 5 Good luck with your decision

Talking with them has been eye opening! I initially had the same perception as you "jobs aren't exclusive to one business school". Unfortunately in a lot of situations they are. Without going in-depth my mom notes that they receive 1000's of resumes a day in the summer from Students looking for jobs, to weed them out they keep resumes from those that have graduated from only a handful of schools. She mentioned to me that her bank, which I won't mention, hires Students for higher level positions from U of T, Queens, Western (Ivey), York (Shulich) and McGill. Of course 'other' positions are available to those that graduate from other schools, but they are most often lower paying and not as comprehensive.
