It's becoming less of one, but programs are ALWAYS out later for macs. AND from what I find, they're WAY worse. I was in a mac store checking out the microsoft word '08 for macs. It's terrible, its like using some program from 95. Really ewwwy.
Programs aren't ALWAYS out later for Mac...there have been many simultaneous launches...

I don't think MS Word is the only program available for Mac OS X...iWork is a much better suite, IMO. For ~$79 it looks and feels much better, and I think the inspector-based layout is much more intuitive. I prefer Keynote over Powerpoint (and Keynote reads PPT files and can export as PPTs - only problem is sometimes a lack of a font, but that's system based) and I prefer Pages of Word. They're both quicker and seem to have more features.

As for Adobe on a PC. I've never had a problem with Adobe programs on either Mac or PC. It runs just fine on both OSs...

About PC World retracting their statement - cool, I never knew that and I never followed that. To be honest I'm not all that surprised as there are many very high-end laptops out there.

There are too many misconceptions out there about both OSs. Many people think Windows can't do any graphics editing (such as Adobe CS), and many people think that Macs can't run any programs or games at all, there's nothing available for it, and that there's no security benefit with it. Each system has their own pros and cons. There are way too many fanboys and ignorant people on "both sides".

Oh, just as a side note, you guys can always pick the laptop the Steve Balmer, CEO of Microsoft uses smile

There's another photo or two from the same event floating around, making photoshop a less likely explanation.

One thing to remember is that at events with multiple speakers, it's more likely that the computer would be set up once and everyone would run their presentations off of the same machine. That's much easier than trying to switch laptops between presentations.

When I googled this, one explanation provided was that the laptop had been used for the previous presenters but there was a different setup running Balmer's, involving having people backstage doing switching for him, etc. Then again random comments on Flickr and Digg aren't the most trustworthy source.

Finally, do remember that MS makes software for Macs too smile

If you go for Windows, remember to downgrade to XP. I believe Dell offers that option to its customers. I find Macs overpriced and overhyped. In case the bling bling look matters to you - check out RocketDock and StyleXP - two pieces of software to pimp your OS.

This is what those two applications allowed me to do to my Windows XP desktop :

I'd like more info on this. Why downgrade to XP. Vista does look nicer, and with computer specs today.. (4gb ram, 2X2.6 processors etc...) what are the negatives of vista?

As of SP1.. nothing really, they've fixed most compatibility issues and driver issues and if you have a computer that can run it, there's nothing wrong with Vista... it seems like it was "hype" to just bash Vista

XP really is far superior to the mess that is Vista. MS may not admit it, but Windows is way past the point where the term 'bloated' would fairly apply. Even Dell admits Vista is very, very unpopular. There comes a point when too many lines of code begin to show.

I think you can get more on this on Wired and Engadget. I can't remember specific articles, but I certainly remember the verdict!

It's going to be their big OS for 5 years... they're going to/ALREADY HAVE fixed most problems right? Especially is I'm running it on 4GB of ran and a core 2 duo 2.5?

MS released Service Pack 3 for XP yesterday. It was a week delayed because of last minute snags they hit regarding compatibility. MS hardly ever gets anything right the first time.

And consider what XP would looks like on those specifications. *wipes tear of joy*

Vista isn't that bad.

If you are getting a computer with less than 2gb of RAM XP would perform better though.

Oh yes you can. You get Vista and downgrade to XP. MS will call this a Vista sale on their sheets and show everyone how popular Vista is, but we know the truth! ;)

Can I do this online? Or do I have to call them?

Windows 7 (Microsoft's next OS) is supposed to come out in 2010.
