Tomorrow is the March break open house at Western. This is also a great opportunity to meet your fellow Studentawards friends. Who's going?

the 2.5 hour drive back to toronto was horrible, strong winds, heavy rain, and cars in front of you spraying so much water that you can barely make out the lanes
other than that it was great, i went to the bmsc presentation (mostly info ive already found on the internet), all rez tours, and the materials science presentations

The lady, Rebecca Smith, menioned how administration will sometimes make special course allowances for you, it's not 100% but if you want to take a bigger courseload, or a course that would normally be unavailable to you, they'll see that you're in scholar's electives and know you're an amazing student. so your chances may be higher of, well, getting what you want. plus there's the obvious pros such as one-on-one time with a faculty member and the ability to shape your own degree. by the time you get to grad school, you'll be way ahead of your peers and you'll have an awesome reference letter. cons: if you're in science, apparently you spend lots of time helping your prof run labs etc as opposed to actually conducting research. i didnt really enquire about that, so im afriad i cant be much help, seeing as I'm in social science. but the student i talked to mentioned that alot. also, obviously the workload is demanding and if you slip below 80 you're out of the program for good, too bad so sad. also some students outside of scholar's electives told me the floor was boring. but that was coming from people in saugeen so really how would they know/how would they have the same way of measuring boring vs. constructive. in reference you your question about whether or not you get to choose which program, kinesiology or biomed, the great thing about scholar's electives is that you can combine them. you can literally choose something you're interested in and continue to refine that topic until you have a specific area of interest. uwo will continue to switch faculty members to find experts on whatever interests you, if you find that your interests have changed too much for your original faculty member to continue helping. so, from what i understand, you sort of take a combination of the two. i know that i can't answer all your questions fully, so i'll post the direct email to the lady in charge of the program. she gave the presentation, she helps go over the applications, she runs everything related to scholar's electives: rebecca.smith@uwo.casend her an email, she was VERY enthusiastic and helpful, and encouraged everyone so send her an email if they had any questions whatsoever. i hope this helped! wow thanks treehugger. My main questions is in regards to the 90 average they require. It states somewhere that you need a "FINAL admission average " of at least 90, so if you're near the cutoff, but say at like a 88 or 89, are you out? I feel like my application is very strong, it's just my marks kind of suffered in the first term due to some personal problems, so basically is it like you just need to show you have the "potential" (the word use on the FAQ site lol) to get the 90 by the end, or if you need to have the 90 by april 1st (like mac health sci/arts sci). The other scary thing is when are decisions made by, and the exact process. Because there is going to be a huge jump in my average at mid terms, and I was counting on them to look at mid term marks before they threw away my application lol. I'm scared now because I just read that Western only makes offers during March and May, meaning they're probably not going to look at mid terms right away :|. Anyway, thanks so much treehugger!

I beleive I have the answer to that as well, and you don't need to worry. She said that they 'assumed' all the applicants had the average, so they make the offers without checking your marks. Then, you either accept or decline, still without them knowing your final marks. THEN, if your final admission avg is below 90, they withdraw the offer. But she said that had NEVER happened before, that students don't go through that application if they didn't even think they'd qualify. So as long as you graduate grade 12 with 90+, your totally fine. omg tree hugger i want to hug YOU right now LOL. I was so worried that I would get rejected for not having the 90 by april, so I'm happy that I'll either get in or get rejected based only on the application. I thought that's why they have the range of the 50-75 people, accounting for people that decline western and the people that don't make the 90 cutoff, but you said it has never happened before, wow. I'm so scared that I get in, but don't make the 90, cause I'm right on the bubble, stupid me for slacking first semester :@. Thanks once again treehugger, this is exactly what I needed to hear! By the way, did she give you additional details in how the 75 people were chosen? Thanks!

She said that grades weren't really important, so for example a 97% wouldn't really have an advantage over a 90%. It's mostly your community service etc. I'm not sure if that works in my favor or not, I suppose that could be good news or bad news depending on your application. ps: Today I got an email saying I made it to round 2 of the National Scholarship selection process. If I make it to round 3 (and get an interview), I would be SO HAPPY! I still haven't won any scholarships yet and am getting nervous. UWO Social Science 2014

congrats! If you did put forth your best, then all you can do is just sit back and wait. I had a question, would you rather want scholar's electives or the national scholarship Of course, the ideal is to get both. One question, when you went to Western, did Rebecca give you any extra info on how the apps get evaluated, and what they're looking for? I know it's looked at by the associate deans (which is a huge deal I think, for Mac's prestigious health sci, they get students to look at it :S ), but are they looking for a quantity of involvement or more commitment to a few specific areas. I really want this, sorry to bombard you with questions. And yea, the not looking at marks is definitely good news for me, I'm in the low 90s. Good luck with your scholarship hunt!
