Parliament is back and sitting once again, so we've got another Throne Speech to guide and direct this parliamentary session: http://www.speech.gc.ca/eng/media.asp?id=1388.

What do you think about this most recent speech? Is it a good one? Is there something missing?

I seriously hope they don't waste time in parliament arguing whether or not we should change the words to O Canada. Seriously, there are MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO ADDRESS!!

So, gender equality is not an important enough issue for you?

The O Canada crap is so... well, stupid. Yeah, gender equality is nice, blah blah blah, but instead of taking money away from programs that really support that stuff, or doing any actual work, they try to make symbolic acts of nothingness.

Make it gender neutral. It's not a huge deal, but we have to draw the line somewhere. Are we going to change "we stand on guard" so the physically handicapped feel equally valued as citizens? I'm sure there are people out there who don't believe we should even have an anthem because national pride is "evil". I find it a little ironic that a woman representing the Queen is talking about trying to modernize "O Canada". Why don't we just become a republic while we're at it?

The government wants to do something for gender equality? How about paying men and women equal wages for a start!

What? This wouldn't take money away from programs. No one is saying, "hey, if we want to change the national anthem, we're cutting $2 million from womens' studies." It's simply updating the anthem.

What better way to reflect gender equality than to establish it in our national anthem? It seems to me that we could have all of these programs out there for women, but if the anthem remains sexist then it would continue to reflect poorly on the country.

Men and women are paid equally: minimum wage starts at $9.50 in Ontario.

Minimum Wage, sure. At higher levels however, there are instances where women are paid 60% of what most men make. It's about high time there was something moderated about that, and not just minimum wage.

In regards to the anthem change, I'd say this is one of those thing that should just be left alone. Many have been singing it for decades and know the words.

Yeah? The jobs are different; the men have better experience; and the men are already more successful than the woman. You really can't say they should be paid identically just because of their gender - take a look at their performance AND THEN judge whether they should be paid equally (the answer is sometimes yes, sometimes no).

Whats funny is that the anthem before was more gender friendly but they changed it in the 70s or 80s I think. There was a woman on the news saying if they are going to change the anthem they should change it to Octopus' Garden sarcastically I would love to have the national anthem as that.

So basically your argument is flawed in multiple ways. Pinkchair was not implying that ALL women should be paid equally to men when they are less qualified. However, in the business place and other fields of employment women who hold authoritative jobs are often paid significantly less to their male counterparts who hold the same position.
