I've been a vegetarian for 8 years, and am now vegan for lent. If it goes well, I want to keep it up. My freind at western said the vegetarian options suck, so I'm guessing vegan options will be minimal. Any help? If anything, I'm thinking that increasing my dietary restrictions will prevent the freshman 15 (or 40..?)

I'm also a vegetarian and am considering Western. I'm going to the open house this weekend and will be eating lunch there. I'll report back on Tuesday!

That's like saying you have to avoid everything - fast food, chocolate, ice cream, chips, candy - or else you'll gain weight. The answer is moderation, not outright denial of some foods over salads. Now go eat some steak. Carleton University Bachelor of Arts in Law

Hey guys, I'm sorry that you disagree with our diets but please don't insult our choices! We aren't preaching to you about the things you eat, and I'd appreciate the same respect. Thanks.

Do the math and you get approx. 20% vegan food. Pretty exact lol, I got it from the caf menus-type thing. Hope this helps! UWO Social Science 2014

Yeah, veggie options suck. You'll probably only get a choice of one or two things to eat, they even put cheese on the tofu sometimes. You'll probably have to go eat at the sandwich bar a lot.

I'm going to be very honest, being a vegan here will be hard unless you're in a suite style rez. HOWEVER, I know a bunch of people who mentioned to the Housing staff that they were vegans after they found out they'd been placed in traditional residences, and they were transferred to suite style. Of course, I can't guarantee that's an option for everyone... housing gets very touchy when people ask to switch residences.
However, the cafs typically have good sandwich/salad bars and some vegan soups every once in a while so you SHOULD be okay

I'm currently in traditional residence at Western, and I often find myself eating vegetarian meals without intending to. So being vegetarian isn't an issue. Sandwich bar and salad bar provide many options when the pre-made meals aren't so good. For protein, there are almost always chickpeas, egg salad, cottage cheese, tofu, etc available... Vegan may be a little trickier, but there are still options. If you end up getting sick of the choices, you can always keep some extra food in your room.

ARMY, you seriously have no idea what the heck you're talking about.
OP, The Queen's the cafeteria has a special vegan section where they make a hot lunch and dinner every day. The cool thing is that the vegan section's pots, pans, cooking section, etc are not shared for making non-vegan stuff. I'd contact residence and hospitality services to find out if something similar is available to you.

Hey, I'm a vegetarian living in Saugeen right now. Personally, I've found that there are a decent amount of veggie choices. By this time of year, though, things have started to get quite repetitve, but this is a complaint I hear even from all of my meat eating friends. But, I'll let you know a few things: As far as hot meals go, there is always at least one vegetarian option. Then there is a well stocked salad bar, as well as a sandwhich bar with lots of veggies. Theres also specialty bars on certain nights like pasta bar where you can get tofu or nothing in your pasta instead of meat. Aside from those things, there are also basic things like bread/bagels and peanut butter, jam, etc., to make toast/sandwhiches with, cereal, soup, etc. That's all I can think of for now... hope I helped!
