I don't know if this is relevant but this is what my guidance councilor sent to us (gr 12 grads) on Friday May 23, 2008.

"Hello Grads!

I hope that your Prom was a good one...now back to the other stuff.

NEWS:

1. UNIVERSITY APPLICATION PROCESS
The May 28th deadline is fast approaching. All of the universities have given us an update of where they are in the admissions process, so here it is:

Queen's University
Final offers were sent out last week and this week. Please remember that the residence deadline for Queen's is June 4th. This is a strict deadline. Any residence applications received after June 4 will not be processed.

University of Ontario Institute of Technology
Final offers were sent out as of May 14th. Any openings at UOIT will be posted on OUAC's Admission Information Service starting June 3, 2008.

Guelph University
Final offers were posted May 14th. The deadline for residence applications is May 28th at 4:30PM. This is a strict deadline.

York University
The third and final round of offers have been sent as of last week. There are still a very small amount of offers yet to go. Residence deadline for York is June 1.

Wilfrid Laurier University
All decisions were posted as of May 16th. All alternate offers have also been considered. Final Fall 2008 cut-off marks are available at http://www.wlu.ca/page.php?grp_id=2256&p=9590 Residence deadline is 4:30PM on May 28th.

McMaster University
The majority of offers have been sent. If students have not received any notification as of May 26th (next Monday) then they were unsuccessful. All offers for Health Sciences have gone out and you should have heard from them by now.

Ryerson University
90% of all offers were posted by the end of last week. The remaining 10% were to go out this week. Please note that some programs are still accepting applications. Visit here http://www.ryerson.ca/undergraduate/admission/apply/programstatus.html to see what programs you can still apply for.

University of Ottawa
The last round of offers have gone out. All information regarding co-op and scholarships has also been sent.

University of Toronto
The final round of offers to UofT were sent May 21st. All alternate offers have also been considered.

Ontario College of Art and Design
All OCAD offers were sent out by the end of March. All applicants should have heard either way by now.

Nipissing University
90% of offers had been sent as of May 16th. The remaining offers were to go in the next week or so. Deadline for residence is June 2nd.

Brock University
All offers, including alternate offers, have been sent. The deadline for residence is May 28th

Carleton University
Most of the offers have been sent, but Carleton will continue to send offers until all programs are full.

Lakehead University
All qualified applicants were admitted for the fall of 2008. Lakehead are still accepting applications to most of their programs. 90% of offers had been sent as of May 16th, but remember the first sentence; if you met the admission criteria, you will be given an offer.

University of Western Ontario
All offers were to have been sent out by May 21st. The residence deposit is due May 28th.

Laurentian University
All final offers have been sent. The residence deadline is May 28th.

University of Waterloo
All offers were sent out by May 14th. Residence forms and deposits are due May 28th.

2. OUAC Admission Information Service.
As you can see from above, most of the fall 2008 offers have been sent. If you have not received an offer, fear not. Starting June 3, the OUAC website will begin posting university programs in Ontario that still have space. You may apply to any of the programs that you qualify for via OUAC simply by changing one of your previous choices. I will remind you again closer to the 3rd of June.

3. OSAP APPLICATIONS

The 2008/2009 OSAP Application is now available. You apply to OSAP online at https://osap.gov.on.ca/eng/eng_osap_main.html

It is important to already know what college/university you are planning to attend in the fall before applying. All OSAP funds flow through the college/university you attend. Apply to OSAP after you have accepted your final college/university offer.

This was lots of information with more to come...Keep checking your e-mail."

Residence is due June 4? What about those on waiting lists? Don't they come out later?

If you are put on the waiting list, there is no guarantee for residence.

Those that are put on the wait list doesn't mean they are guaranteed a spot later on... There's always the chance that someone on the wait list won't get a spot. Queen's or any other university can't wait until everyone on the wait list gets in or not in order to process residence and such...

And my previous post is simply what my guidance councilor sent to grads at my school via e-mail. I simply copy and pasted what he sent.

You'll still likely get a spot if you apply... if theres 295 already filled and they want to fill 5 people, then those 5 would be in the 5 that would have not been filled already.

I'm curious do you know how many people got in to qc and was on the waitlist last year and how big the list was.. I checked http://javascript:newWindow=window.open('http://www.queensu.ca/irp/accountability/cudo_07/index.htm','compare','width=900,height=700,scrollbars=1,resizable=1');newWindow.focus();
and found that they accepted 293 people last year.. does that mean 7 people got in from the wait list

I just finished my second year at Queen's Commerce and thought I would come on here and ease some of your fears. The number one thing for you to do right now is to relax. You've done your work and submitted your applications. Now the ball is in someone else's court. If you think it'll be effective, send a carefully worded letter to whoever you want. I'm not sure if they even take these into consideration but it definitely helps you feel as if you've done all that you can possibly do. I did the same but was accepted off the wait list before they received the letter.

Secondly, don't worry if your extracurriculars don't stack up to the keeners who were president, vice president, executive director or dukes of hazzard scholar. The people who are listing their ECs are probably doing so because they're impressive. A bunch of my friends and I had fairly standard but well executed PSE's and got in. If you're on the waiting list, you've still got a decent chance of being accepted. A lot of these kids who did absolutely everything in high school go on to do absolutely nothing in Queen's Commerce.

The most important thing to realize now is that the waiting list isn't some black hole that sucks up hundreds of students. You're on the list because Queen's thinks you'll be a good fit with the Commerce program; they just need time to see if they have space. So in the interim, accept whichever school you want and be pleased to go there. In the event that you don't end up going to Queen's, university is still an amazing experience anywhere you go. In the event that you do get a call about a spot at Queen's, you'll lose your deposit of a couple hundred dollars but you'll also be a Queen's Commerce Class of 2012 student.

Good luck to everyone. Don't let the waiting get you down. This is your last month of high school. Live it up.

Very motivational. Thanks.

You're right. University should be a good experience wherever we go, if we choose to live it that way. Whether we are good or not Queen's cannot determine nor can they decide. Down the road, it's up to us to prove to ourselves whether we are worthy or not.
