I mean really .. do they? I just recently made a very idiotic mistake and received a mere "caution" and a fine for doing what I did ... will the universities check this and then revoke their offer of acceptance? I have already been accepted to Trinity @ U of T ... I am terrified that they will somehow find out and tell me I can not go anymore.

You would have to be go to court for anything to appear on your criminal record. I highly doubt you have a criminal record.

Oh really? I am totally a n00b to the law and all it entails... yeah, they had a choice of sending me to court or not, but since I had no prior run ins with them, I was let off on a caution & a fine. Still though, my record is not "clean" anymore - I mean, it will say I have had a caution and all that I did ... so how can I not have a criminal record now?

It's not on your record. Your "record" is of criminal charges where you were brought into court, charged with an offence under the law, and found to be guilty or not guilty.

It's a huge deal if something is added to your record and you would be involved in a lengthy legal process before anything would be added.

I've also had a few such warnings, and I have never had any troubles with my criminal record... what Stringer is saying makes sense.

Oh really, you've already had "a few" ? They told me that if I did anything against the law, I'd immediately have to go to court cause they already know about my caution

They were all quite minor/ridiculous... only on the last one did the cops actually give me that whole spiel. I stopped all the mischief at that point, and I suggest you do the same (just in case).

Did they take down your info and stuff? Cause mine was for theft =/ It seemed pretty serious, they banned from Square 1 and all surrounding places... hahaha. Okay, it's not really funny, but you know... of course I won't do stuff like this again. Stupid impulses.

You do not have a criminal record; but you probably have a police record. A criminal/police records check is definitetly not done for the vast majority of programs. Heck, you can do a degree (by correspondence) while in jail. It may be done for more professional oriented programs where you are dealing with vulnerable people, kids, etc. but that would be clearly stated as part of the process. I just looked at it for Education at Ottawa - they do not do one to accept you into the program but there is a requirement for one to be qualified as a teacher. If you are going for something like social work, nursing, etc. and applying to start in the fall, I think it's *possible* this could be an issue, and you should check. Note that I'm pretty confident that one incident of shoplifting, particularly if it did not go to court, and particularly if you are under 18, will not prevent you from those sorts of things in the future. Screwing up again, on the other hand, is much more likely to lead to trouble. Here is what information is released: (per Ottawa police)Quote: The search includes national and local police databases. The possible existence of criminal convictions and outstanding charges, as well as incidents of all police contacts for the previous five years will be considered for release.
The following information contained in local police databases may be considered for release when it is deemed appropriate: • Suspect information, where the release of such will not hinder any ongoing investigation. • Reports resulting from particular incidents relating to the Mental Health Act. • Any notable police contact. This search does not cover the following areas: summary convictions, discharges and pardons (with the exception of sexual offences listed in the schedule to the Criminal Records Act).

TY so much for the info... yep, I know I have a "police" record...
Yeah, I don't think they'd just randomly check...
However, I AM 18, not under.

I think the moral is, if you don't want to be scared out of your mind and/or get screwed over in life by a criminal record... don't commit crimes?
