I mean the US is known as the science centre of the world and a warmonger (even though bad). England is known for its rich academic history. France is known for its arts. Germany is known for its philosophy and science before they massacred their Jews. Japanese is known for its known for its cutting-edge technology.

I know we are very multicultural, but that doesn't really stand out as something special. And hockey in the end is just a game, there are plenty of others ways to stay fit. So does Canada have an identity, and can she develop any in the future?

i think canada's identity lies in its inclusiveness. some people might call it a reputation for tolerance, but others would say that we go beyond tolerance and into acceptance and inclusion, something most other countries don't.

we're the "nice guys" of the world i suppose

'nice guys' haha...

every nation has a national identity...just like every person has a personal identity...the difference lies in the amount of national pride. US>>>>>Canada in nationalism.

One thing I noted about Canada before I moved here, was that they were heavy into peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts.

Most people from other countries may also know us for our 2 official languages...the only thing is, they believe they are English and French (they don't know it's actually English and Chinese clown )

Why do Canadian media outlets go ON and ON and ON about this stupid identity question? It's starting to seem like the Canadian identity can essentially be represented by some emo kid sitting in his room asking himself "who am i". Ugh, enough already.

Canada is the peaceful country in the world. It's focused on the environment, technology, and helping other countries through humanitarian and peace operations in hundreds of places around the world. Its landscape is beautiful and we've got everything from rich oil reserves to more water than we'll ever consume for quite a long time.

well i don't know if that's true

1) we're really behind many countries on environmental issues
2) we're something like 14th for peacekeeping. bangladesh is number 1 i think
3) yes i agree our landscape and natural resources are truly marvelous BUT
4) our water and oil reserves are being quickly consumed, not necessarily by us but in large part the US

We're not really so great with the environment - maybe compared to the US, but compared to Europe, we're not so hot.

i wouldn't exactly call their involvement in the war in afghanistan right now a humanitarian or peacemaking operation.
and these qualities aren't exclusive to Canada - I can say the exact same thing for Germany, Sweden, Norway, etc.
D.Dickin, your idea of our national identity is the one that our government wants us to believe.
nothing positive to contribute here, just felt like being negative *shrugs*

you'd make a great lawyer /or politician though, congrats

ditto. in their efforts to increase national pride, they just end up showing the lack thereof

Everyone knows Canada as the 'peacekeepers'. And that's reason for that as well. Something to do with Canadians inventing the idea of peacekeepers in the U.N.

um, we're kind of not really a very peaceful nation, and although we're concentrating on rebuilding infrastructure/pushing out the taliban in afghanistan, we are still a nation at war.

I think that the national identity is as a "multicultural society" I honestly haven't seen a society that is so inclusive and allows people to retain so much of their original identity in their new country and not start wars or major fights between different ethnic/religious groups. and the architect behind this whole idea was trudeau, so it's not like it just kinda happened, it was on purpose. so our identity is as this accepting country that allows you to retain your original identity.

canada is a cultural mosaic, the states is a melting pot. there's still so much conflict/separation between ethnic groups in canada though, we just tend to gloss over it more and it's just not as prolific due to the smaller crime rate/amt of violence (compared to the states).

And Canada has a lot of Video Game companies in Vancouver, BC. I think reason behind no one looking at gaming as big deal is because not too many people are into gaming yet. Its grown since the 80s and 90s heck of a lot but its still not something global like wars and stuff

We're talking about what we're known for, not that we're the "best in the world". There will always be room for improvement in every country around the world. The government has taken large steps to correct problems and find new solutions that will work best for the country.

Then you would be mistaken. The Canadian Forces is currently in Afghanistan as humanitarians and peacekeepers, along with helping rebuild a strong and stable government for Afghanistan. It is a UN Sanctioned peacekeeping mission. See here for more information.

P.S. We're not at war in Afghanistan. Be very careful with that term.

So we're just being brainwashed into thinking this is what everyone thinks of us? No one else in the world really thinks of us this way?

Awesome. I'd like to be both in the near future. University will kick it off for me smile

Canada is not peacekeeping in Afghanistan. They are mounting offensives against insurgents. They are killing people.

It's a peacekeeping mission. Killing insurgents keeps the peace Afghanistan has been waiting for.
