Sometimes true, sometimes not. I'd say mainly not.

The main reason I drink is so that I'm not that person.

It depends on the experiences. Usually I'm not the sober one, but the few times I have been I've found it to be fun still, though obviously not as fun.

I don't see myself drinking anything other than perhaps wine at dinners.

Having been in university for about three months now I can say the people who have probably done the dumbest things are those who have discovered alcohol for the first time in university. These are the kids getting their stomachs pumped, puking all over the place and getting alcohol poisining. A lot of kids feel they have to live up to the hype and since this is totally new for them they simply can't handle it. Just found this interesting...

I had the same experience. During frosh week, our newly formed group decided to get some alcohol. There were quite a few of us who hadn't drank before and we gladly admitted it. No one bashed us for it, nor did anyone try to force any of us to drink (although many of us ended up having some). But there were these 3 guys, who you knew from the start had never had a drink in their entire lives, who kept trying to act like the stereotypical party guy you see in movies, repeatedly saying things like "man, I'm gonna get so hammered tonight", "this (brand of alcohol) is way better than that (brand), trust me", "man, you gotta chug vodka, not shots", etc. etc. Needless to say, they couldn't keep up with the more experienced drinkers and all three of them ended up puking at one point or another. So now we make fun of them by pretending to raise a shot glass to our mouths and then pretending to faint (all they need is a sniff of the alcohol and they're out).

The moral of the story is, if you don't drink, don't feel pressured to pretend as if you do. No one is going to judge you if you don't drink... and if they do, they're probably not worth being friends with. This isn't an anti-drinking post, I just want to remind people that not everyone in university drinks, and you'll probably make a bigger fool out of yourself if you force yourself to drink than if you simply tell people that you don't drink.

Wow, that last paragraph was g@y.

I hope you savored those few minutes... it's unlikely you'll ever feel the same way again.

Drinking is definitely common in high school. Especially here, since I already have friends who are 18 and can buy alcohol. Thank you, Alberta. The negative is that I don't turn 18 until October 2009... which by then I'll be in university in Ontario and will have to wait another year... balls.

But yeah, I've definitely drank before. I try to avoid getting completely drunk... Facebook photos have already captured some not so great memories. Like karla, though, I've never really gotten that bad... I've never blacked out or vomited, I tend to know where my limits are.

My parents don't know that I drink a lot though, they drink wine and stuff but they tell me not to drink. I once came home tipsy... got grounded. So I just stay over at a friend's house or something. But I always drink with people I trust, try not to get really drunk, etc, so nothing bad happens. Basically, I try not to lose all judgment.

I have also never felt the pressure to drink, I do it because I want to, and I have said no before. It can be hilarious to be the only sober one in the room.

I also try to avoid parties from my school. There was a bear mace incident in the summer and after that I decided to stop going to parties that consisted of the 'partier' kids from my school. There have also been drugs and stuff, and I won't touch the stuff so I say away. Sometimes violence. It isn't safe. I only drink with a few close friends now.

Hurrah for October birthdays! (October 6th for me!)

...balls.

do they hav frosh week at all unis? how bout ubc?

I'm suprised at all of the non-drinkers or i should say never-tasted-alcohol people, if guys haven't i'm guessing u will soon. This senior year in hs i've done it a lot more than before but never got to the point where i couldn't remember anything or passed out cuz i've seen ppl who hav at parties and its not pretty. Oh yea, first time was at a party in grade 9 so i guess it just depends on the ppl u meet and the parties u go to, around my school its uncommon for anyone i know to be alcohol free, and not trying to say anything but the downright truth is the more popular people do drink, its just a fact, at any school i would think. I know lots of smart kids and probably more idiots who drink, but it really doesn't effect u much if u do it within reason, i've got 3.75 GPA and lookin to get a presidents scholarship at UBC, and play sports (senior varsity basketball) so its all up to you to be smart about ur decisions

Do you have any reason for thinking this, or is this one of the 'Well I do it so you will too' things?

Care to elaborate on how that is a downright truth or a fact?

My mom lets me drink at home, not enough to get drunk but she does let me drink. her theory is that I'm old enough to make my own decisions about drinking at home but she doesn't want me to get drunk. she'll let me drink alcohol if I'm at a safe place (i.e. home or a friends home) but if I want to come home I have to call her. which I don't have a problem with. In fact it makes me feel happy to know that I probably won't get into trouble for drinking if I have the sense to call home for a ride.

I don't drink much at a time, a few glasses and the most I've been is tipsy. So my oldest sister is specifically getting me drunk 1 or 2 times before I go to university so that I know what my limit is.

I think it is important to learn what your limit is before you get thrust into a situation where you may drink too much (like university).
I think this kind of echoes what others have said.

I think alcohol tastes good and I understand why people drink it put I don't understand the drink to get drunk theory. it seems silly, but that's just me.

I know what I said contradicts my sisters plans but there is a reason behind her getting me drunk, just drinking to get drunk for no reason seems wrong.

Hahahahaha, so just because some people don't feel like drinking illegally they should be black listed?
