So...um, back to the original topic. I cannot wait for oweek (round 2 for me). I'm so bored right now at home and came here to express me excitement for those entering first year. O week is completely worth going to whichever university you're headed.

Speaking for UWO frosh, you guys are in for the best week ever. Western's oweek is actually a full week with events everyday. If you're living off campus (oc), they have an meeting point on campus for you. Because off campus is considered a constituency with a soph team and everything, during time scheduled for residence events, off campus frosh will also have stuff to do.
Most campuses have dry oweeks. A few people do sneak in alcohol and drink, but you don't need it to have fun at all. Those who are obviously not sober won't be allowed into events and they're just ruining the week for themselves if they drink to the point where they can't remember things the next day.

Even if you don't want to do the University Student council oweek events, each residence and oc has alternate programming. Just because you know a lot of people or grew up in the area, try not to miss out. You'll meet more people than you can possibily remember, but a lasting friendships will be made during this time.

A day or two is spent getting to know your faculty and campus. I didn't find this very helpful, but I tagged along because my soph was a lot of fun, I'd never really been around the classrooms, I got to know people in science who lived on my floor/near me, and it definitely beat just sitting around.

Some things may seem lame like cheering, etc. But trust me, cheering at Talbot Bowl (where everyone gathers for opening and closing ceremonies) is actually amazing. Such an exciting experience, you really get caught up in the spirit of it all.

During Oweek there's a lot of late nights and early mornings, but sleep is so overrated. Don't miss out just because you wanted a few more hours of rest. You only get one oweek as a first year.

Hey! Does anyone know about frosh week at Carleton U? I haven't really heard much about it... are there any activities (other than partying) that tend to be pretty standard at all frosh weeks?? What are some of the coolest things that have been done/ seen or heard of during frosh week?

- Just curious sunny

Wow. Honestly, this forum has an uncanny to turn threads to poop on a whim ~ the more confrotational members (most of them have several hundred posts here) seem to be inspired to start arguments over nothing; I actually haven't read a thread without one. Constructive or not ... what gives?

Phh come on. I think we all have mostly legitimate arguments. There is the occasional bad one and when we have trolls around they always get bad..coughnasircough but I find most arguments fairly intelligent.

I was wondering how many of you guys are part of the math-faculty at Waterloo. This year they have a superhero theme, which I think is pretty hilarious (though kind of cheesy).

HAHAHA AWESOME!

And D.Dicken I don't really think excessive heavy drug use is part of most peoples university careers. Unless of course you're one of those people who call's alcohol a drug, which yes it sort of is but lets get real here.

I have loads of fun, and I can do so without being inebriated and acting like an idiot.

I didn't read all of the 4 pages, so I might be repeating someone, but jesus, has anyone noticed how pricey it is?

I'm not sure how it is at the other schools but at McGill you participate in Faculty Frosh and SSMU (Student Society) Frosh, they are $75 each so it totals up to $150 :S

I'm not quite sure what the activities are (I do know there's whitewater rafting...lots of booze - which might be the cause of the $$$) and I'm assuming it will be worth it but geez.

But yes other than that I am quite stoked for Frosh smile
One more week!

So you're just drinking it as a social drink? Surely you could do the same with a cheaper replacement like juice or water.

Drinking is involved in a lot of social customs, it's something that's been around our society for a really long time and a lot of people enjoy it.

For example, after a rugby game the men do man of the match and the man of the match from each team chugs a beer. Or you buy a beer for your opposite player on the other team.

D.Dicken you can think that alcohol turns everyone into an idiot, but the reality is, a lot of people drink in social situations and have a lot of fun. If having fun means you look like an idiot, than I'm sorry that you're going to live such a boring life trying to look prim and proper all the time.

when i'm out partying or whatever, i like to drink 2-3 shots per hour. i find it keeps me on this weird high, where you're REALLY happy/slightly off-centre with this nice warm buzzy feeling, without the hangover and loss of any sense of dignity or doing things i don't remember the next day. (i guess that's called being tipsy? lol)\ u can't get that with non-alcoholic drinks. SO much funner than partying cold sober.

D. Dickin, I'm headed to Carleton along with you in less than a couple weeks anddd.... I gotta say, we have to party like MAD! cheers

Actually, I have only been to one 'real' party (which barely qualifies because I'm in such a rural area) and just last night was only about the 3rd time I've drank more than a glass of wine - I had friends over and we had yager bombs, watched Pulp Fiction, played Soul Calibur 4 drunk, and made inappropriate yet accepting sexual advances toward each other.

In the span of a year (last August to this one), my opinion in drinking, and pot use has went from:

*drinking is almost always bad because you are ingesting a poison which makes you an idiot, and pot permanently dulls your mind (so basically your opinion, it seems)

to

*drinking is fine in social situations, but not the the point of vomiting or even close to it, but it is great for loosening up and in fact expressing the thoughts you would normally repress (it is great to bring out creativity in thought when used modestly). Pot is alright too, but only if used in the frequency of 1-2 a month to 1-2 a week. Any more and as long as you are smoking... you'll be quite the stupid guy. Keep it in this range though, and you may produce your best work (as long as you are in design/arts and that sort of deal).

About 90% (arbituary number obviously...) of the students in my boyfriends Carleton Architecture classes smoked pot on at least rare basis (rare being once every month or two), but mostly at least once every couple weeks. Drinking though... unless you abstained due to religious or allergy-like reasons, was THE thing to do at least once a week for them.

I'm glad I've had good experiences with drinking, since I am aware enough to know how much is too much, and I've never had a hangover regardless of how much I've drank. In fact, I feel better the mornings after drinking than I do on most other mornings :S Weird, I know.

I'm VERY sure though that if you are in residence, and especially if you have a roommate and plan on staying in your res room often, you WILL drink. Maybe not pot (though exposure to smoke and/or people smoking is inevitable), but drinking in a party-like atmosphere will most likely happen.

And if it's going to happen (as fatalistic as it probably sounds to you), it may as well start with Frosh right?

If you're going in res, I'll be in Stormont. See you later ;)

SwobyJ, that wonderful non-hungover feeling you get the next morning will likely wear off. I used to get it too, and so did my friends, and no more! I rarely get hangovers, but I definitely don't feel extra great the next morning anymore.
