I'm wondering about the same thing too. I've been watching my friends winning scholarships from doing well on the standarized tests (i.e. SAT in the U.S.). But personally, I'm a loser =[

I would say it's pretty freaking rare. I've applied for around 50 and haven't gotten one yet.
Thank god for government loans!

Don't you think if people weren't getting these someone would have noticed... and maybe uh... said something? What would these companies get of of this elaborate scam... a bunch of secret information about how good we all are at motivating others? Give me a break of course its real.

My philosophy is just apply for everything and eventually you'll get something, at least I hope so. The only thing I've gotten so far is the Passport to Education, but I'm only in grade 11, so I still have time

Definately agree Hertz, also though (and this is coming from someone who won one, so its not sour grapes) I think with the bigger ones, which person originally reads yours (there must be so many people for the big ones), their mood, what THEY see as a big deal etc. must play a big factor. Also, there really are so many people with similarly great resumes, and so comparably few that win, so it is a tiny bit of a crap shoot if you really are at that level.

I will agree that luck certainly plays a role in getting shortlisted, no doubt about it. That being said, a truly exceptional application should (note: I won't say always will) stand out regardless of who reads it, the time of day, or the mood of the assessor. Just curious, what one did you win?

For sure, but MANY people have resumes like you wouldn't beleive, and all of them think their top of the pile. That said, there are definately some people that are just way above everyone else, and you're right, for them, luck won't be an issue, with that was me. I got Chancellors. I was a finalist for TD, and am for top 20 under 20. I got a call for millenium. Those two I'm sitll waiting to hear tho. For Chancellors, I think the reason I won that (and got cuz for UT and western) is that I showed a bit of an edge on the app. In addition to the usual stuff, they had a creativity section, which I thought would destroy me (i cant do arts or write well). In the the end, I think its what set me apart, in addition to all the academics and volunteer, leadership and sports, that section, I wrote a creative peice, which exposed my love of extreme sports. I think they look at that kinda thing and say, hes like all these other apps in resume, but hes different cuz he has that edge. This win, among hearing nothing from any of the major scholarships at other schools, says to me that I'm in that pack of, great resume but that level of soo many people, not the 1 in a million.
