You need to be recruited by a university. If you're elite at a sport, contact some university coaches and see if they're interested in you.

My understanding is that they don't exactly exist in Canada.

In the US, they give out scholarships that are directly tied to playing on the school's team. I believe, but I'm not 100% certain and it may well vary, that, for example, if you get a scholarship for volleyball and then decide that you don't want to play anymore, there goes your scholarship. I read something about a female athlete who got pregnant getting her funding cut (although it looks like the NCAA has since ruled that they shouldn't in that sort of situation).

In Canada, you don't get athletic scholarships in that way. I do believe there might be a bit of influence on more general scholarships in some cases - where athletes they are trying to recruit might get a scholarship that's more general in scope ("For leadership & community involvement") - but in that case the "reasoning" behind it is that you're getting it for your past and not because you are then comitted to playing for the team.

I am currently being recruited by two schools for football. In Canada, you will not receive any form of scholarship(full ride, partial) as a result of your being recruited, this isn't the NCAA Div I or IAAcry(the only ones that offer scholarships). I am not familiar with how it works out West with schools that belong to the NAIA(teams from the U.S & Canada that compete with each other) such as UBC and Simon Fraser. Some schools may have set up a fund as per OUA ruling where they offer scholarships to student-athletes who are entering university with academic marks over 80%, the thinking being that if you were not participating in the sport for which you have clearly dedicated a significant amount of time and training( ie the reason you're being recruited), that you may have been able to achieve an 85+% average and qualify for an academic scholarship. The minimum they can offer is around $500 to a maximum of $5000. There are also bursaries set aside for student-athletes specifically, but these can only be accessed once you're a student at the school, and bursaries do vary by school.

If you have not been recruited by a school, or if you have an idea of what school you would want to go to, try to get contact information for the coach/recruiter, and contact them, along with any film you have(if possible)

P.S. what grade are you in, and what sport(s) are you interested in?

This may not apply to this year's high school grads, but I think I heard that the NCAA may be expanding and allowing Canadian school to join and work their way up from the lower tiers. In this case, I would assume athletic scholarships in Canada would become a possibility. I'm not sure about the validity of my sources though, so don't go by me! Also, just because you don't get an "athletic" scholarship, doesnt mean you cant get a scholarhip.

Often if you have shown that you are at such a high level at any sport, this will greatly improve your application for a general scholarship. It shows talent, a ton of perserverence, and obviously, athletic ability. Maybe apply to some of the less specific scholarships and play that up as your strong point if athletics is what you're best at.

I know that although I am not at a level in any sport to be recruited by a university, sports helped my scholarship applications alot, because I participate in many, both competitively and recreationally.

You can't get one if you don't try so throw your name at whatever's left and hope!

eco your sources are right, the NCAA is allowing CIS schools to join the NCAA Div II athletics from this year. This was due to the high interest from Canadian NAIA schools such as UBC and Simon Fraser. However not many schools in the East-Ontario,Quebec-are willing to join in at the moment due to the conflict of schedules between Canadian and American university schedules. For example NCAA football continues into December/January- a time when CIS football is over, and students are focusing on exams.

I would have to whole heartedly disagree with you, but maybe only the schools I know of are like this.

My school guidance department can tell me about one thing, and they tell me it right when I walk in the door of their office. WE'RE NOT SWITCHING COURSES TODAY! --- lol

Only things they know come from students, and usually all they can help you with is printing a transcript. Someone how was applying to an american university (all of which have a common application) had to teach guidance how to fill it out!

I'm just lucky I have a group of teachers at my school that know what they're doing, so I can avoid guidance.

If your school is like this, your best friend will be google.

Ha sucks to be you! I haven't had trouble with guidance counsellors not knowing things...although they definitely don't know about all scholarships. Also if you are planning on going away it is likely they don't know as much about more national scholarships, or those offered through other schools.

On a different note, I have heard of people getting athletic scholarships...they aren't full ride or anything, but several thousand dollars. My understanding is that they are supposed to be comparable to academic scholarships.

Well, I'de check University or Colledge sites, which usually include a boursary/financial aid page that might help you. OR you can try looking up a sports associations site such as ODWHA (Ontario district womens hockey association) whom might have a scholarship program.

To be legible for an "athletic" scholarship, you still need an 80% entrance average.

Getting an athletic scholarship at a Canadian school I heard is going to be possible in a few years. I know a guy on my ski team (provincially and nationally ranked) who was offered a package of scholarships valued at $10,000 to go to Lakehead and join their ski team. However, in the mean time us Canadian kids have to go to the states for athletic money. I am almost finished the whole recruiting process as I have to choose between two schools in the states now. I don't know what sport you're in but I am in baseball. I started by finding a whole load of schools across the US that had my major. I checked out which schools had baseball. I thought which states I would most likely be able to get a scholarship. Texas and Florida were out of the question. I got all my stats, marks (GPA, SAT, ACT) together, personal info, and references all on one sheet and started runnning off e-mails like crazy. In all I e-mailed around 200 schools. I received replies from about 1/4 of the schools and received replies who heard about me from about 10 other schools. From there I flat out asked is there money available for me through athletics and academics? Some schools (D1 schools) said they wanted me for a walk-on and I had the option to get academic money. Some schools could only offer athletic money and no academic. For here I narrowed it down to 5 schools who had very nice offers. Then I talked to them a bit more over the phone and two of the five offered me a bit more money than the rest. Of the two schools I went down to their schools for visits and interviews. Right now I am at a point where I am going to pick my favourite one because there is not much difference in the amount of money being offered. Oh ya, since I am from northern ontario I had to make all my contacts and I had to self teach myself the whole process becuse my guidance counsellor's knew very little. When they went to the filing cabinet to pull out pamphlets on American universities I kid you not they had cobwebs and were from the 80's. Anyways, don't forget that D1 schools offer more full rides than D2 and D3 schools do offer scholarships to athletes in the form of academic packages. I hope this helps.
