Animal Farm - George Orwell (not very big, but very interesting.)
A Clockwork Orange - Anthony Burgess (Once you get a hang of the language, its excellent)
Brave New World - Aldous Huxley (Huxley and George were very similar in their ideals)
Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury (Best thing I ever read in school)
Black House - Steven King and Peter Straub (Excellent characters and great theme)
The Hobbit - Tolkien (sparks your imagination)
Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus - John Gray (Best thing to ever happen to my relationship!)

if you are a science type of person, then you MUST read the short story "The Last Question" by Isaac Asimov. Just Google it. It takes place in different time period starting with the present, then after a couple thousand years, then after a couple million years and so on..and its about the constant need of energy and about reversing entropy and stuff...The ending amazed me

1984 isn't usually considered as sci-fi, although it's not so far from it either. It is a dystopian future and has much more to do with politics than technology. The book is very "culturally significant" in that there's references to it all over the place. I think I read it on my own, and then I ended up reading it in grade 11 English, and then I read it in a philosophy course I read in first year university. It's a good book though.

I haven't read the Androids one, although I should put it on my list ;)

FAQ's:
1. Will I get in? See: electronicinfo.ca for Ontario schools. If you have a couple percent above the marks there and it's not looking at supplementary, the answer is almost certainly yes.
2. Anything else: Google it before asking.

I read 1984 on my own too, and then in ENG4U... great book!!

I've also heard Phillip K Dick (Androids...) is a great writer. Apparently he wrote whatever the movie "Rollerball" was based on.

Blade Runner is loosely based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep apparently. Rollerball is based off of a short story of the guy who wrote the original screenplay (there's a 1975 version and a 2002 version, the 2002 version is apparently more action, less dystopian future). I've seen none of these films, yay Wikipedia.

RIGHT right... I always get those two confused! I thought they had some kind of relation... I haven't seen either movie either, but I used to work in a video store and I remember reading something about Rollerball, maybe that it was based on Blade Runner or something... but yeah, thanks for the clarification!

Funny because I have watched both movies, in fact I own them both I loved Blade Runner Cult classic, but it felt something missing I think. It stars Harrison Ford. Rollerball is basically one of those sports stories but, it shows how intense the sport is.

I know right!?? Right before DH came out I re-read the whole series and you pick up so many clues after the (cough-fifth-cough) time through! I think I've read OOTP like 12 times now... sad... but I have it on audiobook and I listen to it while I do dishes!!

Can you just wait for the encyclopedia JKR is writing? I'm dying for it!!

Also, if you want something interesting in the meantime, and I know everybody and their dog has suggested it... but I just started Twilight and it's pretty interesting so far. smile

Really? I hated 1984, I read it on my own, and i would've had to read it again in english, had i not taken it in summer school. It was SO in your face, like in a this-world-is-SOOOO-oppressive way, and in case you didn't notice from the 50 billion details I just gave you, and hte other 50 examples of everyday-general-oppressiveness I'm giving you, just in this chapter alone, then I will clarify my point about the oppressiveness of this world, by making sure that all of my characters are absolutely misereable, or two dimensional, or complete idiots. If they are 2d or idiots, they are only so because this world is sooooo oppressive."

A similar book, but one that actually had a story line that was interesting was Brave New World. It's one of those curriculum books, but it actually was an interesting read, and wasn't nearly as obnoxious as 1984, and it was mildly humorous.

p.s. Harry potter is amazing, I agree, especially the last book, though it did resort to collect-these-items-to-achieve-this-level-and-go-to-this-person-to-complete-this-task type plot, but it worked and it was really just a nice read.

I have to say that from what I've recently read, Orhan Pamuk is one of the most creative and cerebral authors. People talk about Catherine's line from Wuthering Heights "I am Heathcliffe" as the most enigmatic statement in western literature. If that's the case, Pamuk has created the most enigmatic novel in eastern literature with The White Castle. Read him; you won't be disapointed.
