I went back for an extra semester this year, and it was great. I felt so much less stressed than in Grade 12, which in turn caused my marks to go up. I actually got into all the universities I applied to at the late end of their first rounds of acceptance. I had 3/4 acceptances by February and got accepted to UofT late last month. If anything I would say the extra year in school is a good option, but some people, especially parents say that its a waste of time. Think about it though, what's the difference between taking a year off and taking 6 months off? I finished school in January, and have been working full time to save up for school, so that's a definite plus. As far as, how colleges/university will view it, I don't think it matters. I had two friends in fifth year this year as well who got into their college programs at Centennial and Fanshawe a month after they applied.

if you want to stay for an extra semester or even year then do it. you might not want to stay for another year because chances are that you'll get sick of it. in another post you said that you didn't know what you wanted to do so this can help you decide what you have a passion for. what area do you excel in (math and science or humanities and social sci.)? if you decide that things will be a lot easier. if you have good marks right now (good enough to be accepted at a college or university) then don't stay for another year because you can easily switch (from what i've been told) to a different program in the same faculty.

this is definitely something that's been bothering me for a while. i don't know what i want to do; my marks are quite high and i've gotten into my programs of choice but i don't know how to choose from amongst them. (as in, i don't know whether to go into math/biz, science, or social sciences), and i think staying an extra year would benefit and prepare me better for university (taking more courses, earning more money, etc.) There are many people at my school who opt for the fifth year (as in, some of my classes have about 2/3rds fifth years) and contrary to what parents might think, the greater majority were not people who 'couldn't get in during their fourth year'. in fact, many have above ninety averages (i know two people whose averages were mid-90s and who decided to stay...so they definitely wouldn't have had any problem in gaining admission---and those marks were in more difficult courses like discrete and chemistry). they wanted to stay to learn where they really want to go, to get more courses, work more, and get more involved. it's not a wrong choice by any means and most universities (that i know of) will not differentiate between a fourth year and a fifth year.

I definitely know what you mean with regards to the french immersion having less choices. A good deal of our graduating immersion class is coming back again because there's so much more they want to take. If you want to go back, then by all means go back! Free(ish) education, and you're not missing anything at university/college that won't be there the next year. If you feel like you're just not ready, or that highschool still has something to offer, then there's no shame in staying a year. I have friends who are staying and they say they just don't feel ready to leave yet. And some who're just taking a year off to work. Whatever you think is good for you, do it -- don't worry about what other's want. Good luck!

I stayed back for a year. I would not recomend it, if you don't have to do it. If you have all the pre-requisites for the course you want to take in University I would say just get out of highschool! I found it hard going back a year because all of my friends and my class had graduated and moved on, and I was still stuck there. I would definately not recommend it.
Good Luck in what you chooose

All the friends I have who are in grade thirteen, and chose to take an extra year, are all very happy with that decision it seems. They are all very relaxed, and seem to work really hard- and get good grades because of it. They're focused, and fun. However, the people I know who chose to work for a year, and raise funds to get to school- they seem to have lost their drive to ever eventually go.
I think that if you feel you need that extra time between highschool and university, that you aren't ready emotionally or whatever- just take another year at highschool, and don't join the workforce instead. If you give yourself the chance to lose momentum, or forget what a joy it is to learn things, then most likely you will do it when the chance arises.

Personally I think the only good reasons to stay behind an extra semester or year are if you seriously need to upgrade to actually be able to get in to most university programs (as in, you got 70's and below on your first time around) or if you have dramatically changed goals and suddenly decide you want to go into Science/Engineering instead of Arts. On the other hand, I do think it's legitimate to take a year off between high school and university; and I suppose I can see taking a course or two to help you sort out what you want to do while working and saving money.

there are people who will benefit from an extra year, especially those who aren't "ready" for university. some people lack credits, some lack time-management skills, some don't have the appropriate prerequisites....it's not a bad thing to stay back. sometimes it's even necessary, such as for those who want to change their majors and need different high school credits.

Its a good idea to stay back if you don't get in to your #1 choice. I'd rather stay back and year and get my #1 choice then settle for #2.

I really am enjoying my victory lap, but at my school you can play sports for 5 years, so I decided to take co-op to see if I was actually interested and able to deal with the career which I thought I wanted and I was also able to play sports and work during it...At some points I wondered why I stayed back, but now I am happy that I did, I feel that I will be able to handle University now as opposed to last year...

I didn't go back to high school for another year and no I am just a week away from finishing my first year in college. I am happy that I am here and I do think that I made the right choice for myself. However, highschool is so much fun and I did enjoy it very much. But I still have a few regrets and if I could have the chance I might take it to go back and do some things over again. For example, I would join so more school teams and participate in school spirt things more. I wish I would get the chance to spend more time with my friends and be a kid for a bit longer. But in all I think the choice really has to be based on the person because I am happy with what I did. And yet my brother is returing for another year in high school next year, thats just what is best for him. Like I said, you just need to sit down and think about what you really want and what is best for you! Good luck, I know its not easy!

If you're even thinking about the extra year just do it because you will regret it if you don't. Having to go to a year of college and then realizing you want to change your feild and have to go back and take high school courses after so long is going to screw you over emotionally and financially. For example to take Biology 30 after the age of 19 or 20 you have to register and it costs $600. Definatley just take the extra year and raise your average and your level of preperation.

I would definitely suggest doing an extra year of high school if you feel you need to do it. I wasn't sure where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do and started out in Arts. My grades were good but I was still really confused and so I figured it's better I switch to U of T and save money and find out what I love to do....well that didn't really work and I ended up going to Dalhousie for another year and did International Development Studies. While I loved Halifax I just couldn't be so far away from home and thus I came full circle and returned to the University of Waterloo. So, in all honesty, I wish I had stayed back a year and maybe that would have saved me all the expense and uncertainty that I've had in the last four years!
