I actually don't have a cell phone. I might get one soon though, there's a neat new company that's a sublet of Telus that caters to broke arses, aka students. 25 bucks a month for 100 minutes, unlimited evenings/weekends (at 7pm) and unlimited texting. There's some really cheap add-ons too, but if you want to keep your bill as low as possible, be cautious about getting these add ons. Ohyeah, it's called Koodo, you've probably seen the creepy commercials.

but the phones are complete crap. the best one is a KRZR which sucks. also its telus which sucks, i switched from them, they get crappy signal and its CDMA which is a pin in the ass when u wan tto get a new phone

I think Virgin Mobile is a better choice than Koodo...

I got a K790a (sitting somewhere as my backup phone now) when it was first released on Rogers and signed a family plan contract for 3 years and got the w810i(sister's) as well. However, I'm currently using is a Docomo P905i w/ Hypersim hack on Rogers except, this bloody phone can't make calls, only receive them which is sort of a PITA as I have to text someone to tell them to call me. Meh, at least my phone > all my friends' phones.
I'm thinking of switching to a SO905ics instead but the phone is too bulky and I prefer flips. That is, if I don't have to use the money for other stuff instead (apartment furnishings).

Paying $45 a month for family plan and this November will be the second year. I'm planning to call Rogers' retentions to get a better deal + new phones (sell them perhaps).

Thats great that you talked the price down, I just asumed there is nothing I could do. I had the same plan but rogers is such a rough deal and not many of my friends stayed with them, the network calling was useless. If I could do it again, I would buy a phone outright as pay as you go with Virgin and then add or subtract plans as I need to without restarting a 3 year contact.

So, what did you say to them to get free caller ID?

Petrocanada phones are cheapest prepaid phones. If you don't talk much over cell phone, this may be the best choice.

Their cell phones cost from $60~$120, and prepaid cards are like $20,$50 with 180 days till expiration, and $100 with 360 days.

20 cents a minute local/ 30 cents/min for long distance

HOLY CRAPP im so proud of myself big grin

so i called rogers and said i wanted to cancel my account cuz it was too expensive ($31 for 50wdy/1000wkd, that's it). so he was like um ok yeah well we have this special offer, for $15.50 (incl system access fee) i can get you 40 minutes per month (lame, i know. but i really don't use it THAT much, and besides if i exceed the minutes, it would still be cheaper than $31/month). so i was like oh that's great...caller ID would also be nice, so he said ok that's usually 6.50 but i'll give it to u for $2, and as he was punching the stuff in, i said, actually i would like voicemail too (which is usually 6.50/month), and he was like that's fine, voicemail+CID will be a total of $7/month, and you also get 125 free txt messages big grin. so right now i'm like WHEEEEE thanks to whoever that person was who mentioned this idea!!! lol gee i feel sorta bad for being a quasi-haggler....but yea im happy now smile.

oh yeah he told me how koodo charges $10 for every time you call customer service, and $10 whenever you make changes to your plan. which does seem a bit ridiculous, but it still wouldn't be that bad unless you have constant problems or can't make up your mind.

if that stuff above made ANY sense...lol.

dont mean to burst your bubble but $10 per month pay as you go gives you around 40 min. no access fee and free caller id, call waiting and voicemail. although texts are 15 cents each (you can buy a package though...100 texts per month for $5 per month i think)...............basically pay as you go is worth it if you use 60 or less minutes per month. also you arent tied down with a contract

i want to get a blackberry curve, and this is what Bell has: 4mb internet, unlimited incoming calls, 250 minutes, and unlimited evenings + weekends for $55 + 8.95 fee.
sounds decent..

For whatever reason, all of the companies rape you on internet usage on the Blackberry - other internet capable phones offer unlimited usage for a few $ per month, but Blackberries wind up at more than that per megabyte you go over (when my mom was looking at it, the 4mb plan was I think $12/mb if you went over; unlimited internet on other phones was like $7 per month). 4mb is really not that much, and I can see it being very easy to go over.

I'm on my mom's business plan with Bell
and currently get:

Voicemail
Call Display
Unlimited nights & weekends
Unlimited 6pm to 8pm Calling
Unlimited text messaging
250 minutes (New DynamicBiz 250 or something)

Which comes to 35.55 (with sys access fee, 911 fee and tax included)

Is this pretty good? Should I keep it?
I've never exceeded the minutes even though I use my phone pretty regularly + lots of calling for work.

I won't be working next year... and probably will use the phone even less. Is it worth looking for a cheaper rate?

Ditto to Kaylya, you are going to go over the 4 MB, trust me. If you plan on going on facebook, etc, you should just get unlimited mobile browsing!

I think the reason for the pricing is that RIM has a fixed price for access to their servers (through the Blackberry Internet Service).. so all phone companies need to charge a high rate.

Unlimited on Blackberry isn't offered for consumers though, I think it's only for corporate plans.
I could always go for a non-PDA phone, but I really like the full keyboard.
My friend has the LG Rumour.. but it's soo bulky.. and the same with those HTC phones.

I kinda like that new LG Venus touch screen phone that Telus has though.. i'm sure it'll be way cheaper even with unlimited browsing and texts.
