hey, what kind of res option are you guys all choosing

the traditional style
or the suite style

and for those who have already experienced it. what are the pros and cons?

i know choosing traditional is alot better in the sense that it makes things much more easier. with the meal plan and all
but suite style. is also less expensive?
umm
i'm not really sure how to approach my decision, and neither do my parents
thanks for any input, in advance!

suite style is more expensive actually ( i think).

i'm opting for suite style since i don't like sharing bathrooms as much or sharing rooms and i'm hoping for a single room regardless. it'd be nice to have cooking facilities. i'm veg. so my food options are going to be quite limited unless i can cook some stuff up myself

suite is 1 800 more than a double room.

if you can live with a common bathroom, will eat most (if not all) meals in the meal hall, and dont absolutlely need a single room to yourself. then save the 1800 and go for traditional. plus you will meet more people.

also take a look at the virtual tour to get a feel of each res (its not much but its better than nothing)

i lived in suite-style both years. the good part is you're only sharing the washroom with one person. you get a single room. there's a kitchen + common room. it's not as loud (since there's the suite door and then your bedroom door shutting the noise out)

the bad part is that if you dont like to cook, you'll have to go to another rez during the weekend to eat. and it's not fun esp. in the winter/rain (at least for me anyways)

also ... in suite-style residences there's only one set of washing and drying machine per floor. so sometimes you have to wait a while if other people are trying to do the laundry the same time as you. (i did mine at random hours though so i never really ran into this problem)

hope that helps.

Uh, all suite buildings (except Alumni) have their own cafeterias with a 7 day meal plan.. are you saying that they aren't open on weekends?

They're not, but you can walk across the road (or wherever else) and eat at another rez. Which isn't that bad, compared to other universities, where there might be only one or two caferterias that serve ALL the residences.

don't do anything until you actually call western and ask what course of action would be best.

All Traditional style cafs are open on weekends, but not Suite style cafs. At Traditional residences, after 7 there is Snackbar (serving pizza, and an assortment of other hot food...generally not as healthy as what you'd get at dinner, but there's also a sandwich bar where they'll make you sandwiches, wraps quesidillas, etc.) which is open till 11 on weekdays and 12 on friday and Saturday. By 7 day meal plan they just mean you can use it everyday anywhere that's open.

wow, glad to hear about the snackbar serving hot foods. i can't stand eating cold foods/snacks sometimes and it was worrying me that if i miss dinner for whatever reason, that's it. are there snackbars at suite style cafs?

when dorm rules say no appliances in rooms, do they mean those little electric kettles as well? i really need my hot water 24/7 so i'm a bit concerned about what to do.

If i want my order as Suite/Single/Double do i still check off the single room, and then since the suite comes with its own room itll gimme suite first.. or will it give me a single room first?

No, those little plug in kettles are perfectly fine and isn't against the rules. In suite style I guess it wouldn't matter as much because of the kitchen, but for traditional they aren't as strict as you'd think. Just be reasonable if your in traditional with the appliances you bring (and perhaps don't bring them on move in day if they're not supposed to be there). I've known people to have microwaves and water coolers in their room, but that's as far as I think you should go with electronic appliances in traditional. I think unless its reported to the rez manager or something (but really...who'd be so stuck on the rules to do that? usually people ask to use microwaves anyways..) no one really cares. That really goes with all rules. Go ahead, bring that rolly chair, couch, etc...as long as you don't do something stupid and cause damages or safety issues and as long as you leave with the furniture you brought, it's fine.

If you want suite first, put that first. It's in a completly different category from single rooms, etc. All suite style rooms are single rooms anyway. If you put suite first, that's what will show up as your first choice. Your decision for whether you'd like a single room should one free up is only considered if in the lottery, your name gets pulled out later and the suite style rezs are already filled so you get a traditional rez.

CRAP.....I didn't notice the $600 deposit until YESTERDAY. I haven't even been able to get in contact with the UWO res office. Is there ANYWAY I can get my $600 deposit today? Can I pay by credit card?

On a side note: What's the best res for a BMOS student?

If your payment, for whatever reason, don't get there by the 28th
does that mean, your offer for residence is COMPLETELY CANELLED

or does it mean, you're put in the waiting list, and may be offered rez as spots continue to open?

I send my money through my bank on saturday but still haven't received conformation. Does this mean that my res spot has been cancelled?? This sucks considering that there are people who sent their deposit after me but received the conformation before.

Well, I called them this morning, and they said they had to receive the deposit by today. So I ended up having to get my dad to drive me to Western to make the deposit and back lol....

Anyways, so what's the best res to choose for a BMOS student? There's been one suggestion for Saugeen (though I don't plan on nor do I want to get caught up in all the partying there), any other suggestions? Some rankings and reasoning for each res would be nice, thanks.

well, i believe there's a bmos floor at saugeen so that might be helpful.

look at the western map and look at where most of your classes will be held. if you can get a res close to there it'll save you a lot of time and hassle
