Saugeen is the wildest residence, but the reputation is overrated IMO. What are you looking for in residence though? That's the only true way to know how to help you.
For me I had originally listed Perth, Saugeen and Deli as my top choices. Perth only because it was literally right across from the stadium for football practices, weight room etc. Now that I've been around most of the campus though I switched the order and listed Deli, Saugeen, then Perth. For me all the residences across the river (Med-Syd, Elgin, Alumni) seem so out of the way just based on my opinion, so I listed those at the bottom of my choices. I would also prefer living in traditional, and my first suite style is Essex which I listed as 5. I'm also crossing my fingers for a single.

I'm having a hard time deciding hwo to rank my rez's. Style aside (doesn't matetr suite or traditional), which residences would u rate the highest and why.

btw i dont like delaware, its grungy, it doesnt matter if its close to everything.

I know many people have the "anywhere but saugeen" mentality. is this warranted? is it that crazy?

I know delaware is suppose to be grungy, but the thought of music students and art students and those kind of faculty based events just make me drool.

I'm one of the anywhere but saugeen people, sure the party thing could be overrated but a big part of it for me is that I prefer suites and it is not really close to any of the buildings i'd be frequenting anyways.

so far i've ranked:

Perth
Elgin
Med-Syd
Essex
Delaware
Alumni
Saug-Mait

What do you guys think? It's really important for me to have single room and as private/clean a bathroom as possible, yet I'm scared that I'll meet less people in res if I go for suite.

yeah i'm freaking out because the 'rents want me to go on leadership or volunteer floors, but i think there'll be a lot of conflict because everybody has very similar goals. i'm worried about the environment a lot, i don't want to live on a floor where everybody is just trying to beat everybody else.

From what I've seen faculty floor members become really close to eachother and it's not competitve at all. It's hard not to become really closeknit when you have classes at the same time, midterms and exams at the same time, and assignments due at the same time. On my floor (not interest based at medsyd), in one of my courses (I'm in science), there were only two other people on my floor in it. When it was time to do the on line quizzes we had every so often, sometimes I wished there were more people around to help with things. I know that on a science faculty based floor, there would probably be a minimum of 10 people in the same science course. If it was time for a quizz, everyone would work on it together, if not together in the same room, then with the doors open, calling out questions, and answering etc. I haven't heard of any rivalry at all come out of faculty floors between residents. Sorry, I don't know anything about volunteer interest floors, but I imagine it's similar. Everyone's in the same boat. Everyone I know who was on a interest based floor loved it. I also know someone who was on the leadership floor at perth. The only problem he saw was that when he kind of stepped out and took a look at the way his floor was overall, he said that they were so comfortable with just hanging around each other, that they may have seemed a little obnoxious at times. People feel pride in there interest based floors. Being on just a regular floor myself, I have to say I can see the academic benefits, but I like the diversity of regular floors because someone in another faculty (or gender, for those looking at girls only floors, or with different interests) really bring other povs. Whichever res or floor you end up in though, its what you make of it, and in general you will love your floor.

Elgin and Med Syd I think are pretty far away from the main hub of the campus (as compared to saugeen) on the map. Is it a walking distance (e.g. about 20 minutes...since i tend to sleep in late and always end up rushing) or would i have to rely on the bus every day to get there?

It depends what you call the "main hub of campus". I lived at medsyd this year and for my class at social science, I could make it fast walking in 10 min. Going a little slower, I would probably take 15-20 mins. Crossing the bridge from medsyd or elgin will take you 5 mins. I don't mind the walking at all (and I usually hate walking anywhere). Anyways, if your only problem is with mornings, make your classes a bit later. With the hours I kept last year, 10:30 was manageable on most days. 9:30 was pretty bad. Make your schedule according to how you feel you can take mornings. Don't kid yourself by setting 8:30 classes just because you handled them in high school (unless you have a LOT of discipline....or you live off campus with your parents). Everyone I know who took on 8:30 classes regretted it to varying degrees, even those disciplined people).

Nobody I know ever takes the bus from the University drive residences (alumni, elgin, and medsyd) to get to classes. Keep in mind first your classes will pretty much be all over and just because you're in a certain faculty doesn't mean you'll have classes only in related buildings (ex. I had calc at the social sci building).

I'll answer your bathroom question too. At medsyd, I hardly ever ran into anyone in the bathroom on a regular basis. I never had to wait for a toilet, sink or shower (the showers are actually amazing...no waiting for hot water and great water pressure). There would sometimes be 2 other people in there brushing their teeth, etc. Most people going into res have the same preferences and past experience with bathrooms (clean and shared with as few people as possible). Most people have respect for that space. The only time I've seen bathrooms get messy are on weekends after people unwind and drink...or maybe a floor will have a party. If someone throws up, usually their friends or an RA will clean it up. The bathrooms get cleaned every single weekday. I never felt that the bathroom was gross or anything and I'm pretty specific about cleanliness. Word of advice though: wear flipflops in the shower whatever res you're in (even suite) just because it is still a public place.

I'm sure its frowned upon by housing and everything, BUT

if you find someone with the same smoking/alcohol/neatness preferences as you can you switch residences in august once u find out where you're going to be? I know housing wouldnt be happy & people say you're happy wherever, but is it at all possible?

Huh?

If you're not happy with the residence they give you, is it possible to switch with someone?

So say i end up in essex, but wanted med syd....and i find someone in med-syd who wants essex.... can we switch?

I asked the same thing at the res office when I found out I got a traditional when I wanted suite. The answer I got was that unless I had issues with the people there then I couldn't switch. It would simply be a huge hassle if they got requests to switch when people hadn't even tried the residences out yet. I was told that peopel rarely try to switch after a couple of weeks because oweek is really a unique time where you can just go up to someone, shake their hand (seriously..that's what we did), and introduce yourself without looking and feeling like an idiot. You bond with your floor, sophs, etc. and it wouldn't feel right to switch. If you had issues with roomates, etc that couldnt' be resolved by RAs, etc that weren't caused by illegal or unsafe activities, you would probably get the chance to switch residences, if there was an opening. You could get moved to a different floor, or to any available room in another res (you don't get to pick). Throughout the year, people might get kicked out of res for getting caught doing things that they shouldn't be doing as outlined by the residence contract..Each res has pride in itself, and the sophs will definitlely instill that pride in you during oweek. People are generally very happy wherever they end up! I ended up absolutely loving my traditional res (medsyd).

Thanks, that makes me feel alot better about choosing leadership/volunteer floor.

A thing I love about UWO is that everybody is so friendly... I have yet to meet a UWO student who is discouraging or mean to new students. I always have people tell me that I'll love the res no matter what and that is really comforting. Now, over in the Queens res thread, nobody seems to care about your happiness or attempt to reassure you...

Hey all! I'm a new member here, and will be a new student at Western's Biological and Medical Science in September. I have a question about res...

I'm aware that it will be fairly unlikely for me to get a single room due to limited numbers. However I would still like to put single rooms as my top choices, but in the case that I end up with a double room I would like to be roomed with a friend of mine. I realize we both have to fill out the forms identically and request each other, but will putting a friend down mean I'm automatically given a double room?

yea, what josh said. Specifically, it depends how you ranked your residences. If you put suite styles first, then there is more of a chance you get those. However, that's exactly what I did and I ended up getting my 5th choice (a double room a medsyd). On move in day I was told that I had been upgraded to a single room I guess because one had opened up and I was on the list as wanting a single room should one open up. A tour guide told me that in traditional residences, 20% of the rooms are single rooms. Some of those are automatically taken up by sophs, and RAs. Next they're given to 2nd year students (who applied in January) and I think next are people with averages over 95. Also, three of my friends got single rooms because of medical issues, like past injuries, conditions, etc. I'm not sure how exactly those special circumstances get worked out, but..just so know.

Think of the lottery system. If you choose your friend as a roommate, it's highly likely you'll end up together somewhere and you're twice as likely to get a res at the top of your list. You should decide whether living with your friend is worth overriding that chance of a single room and your reason for wanting to live with your friend. If it's for familiarity, just know that it's actually a little easier to meet people when you're by yourself and are forced to kind of put your self out there and introduce yourself those first few days. If it's because you don't want a roomate who you'll possibly not get along with, remember that there are somedays where living with another person, whoever it is, is going to get on your nerves a bit. Generally it works out well though. If not, Sophs and RAs are there to mediate.

I'm glad I've helped, Pinku! My first year res experience was a LOT of fun and I remember what it was like trying to decide how to rank things, etc....I kind of wish I found this forum last year..

When you say 95+ averages get one of the first dibs on single rooms, you mean the Scholar Electives kids right?

I hope that upgrade happens to me XD I'm such a picky person I feel sorry for my future roommate.

Yeah, the scholar's elective students live on a floor in elgin. This year it was the First floor on the East side I think. And actually, I double checked the average thing. You get a guarenteed single room for second year if you enter first year with an average above 90. If you're really picky about cleanliness, be sure to say so on your questionaire ranking. If its more personal kind of stuff, your RA will give out room mate contract papers (not official or anything), that help in laying ground rules on visitors, habits, privacy etc. because most people don't go into res having ever had a roomate before. You might have to compromise on things, and if things don't really work out, there are lots of other places to study if that's what your worried about.
