So, it's infamous for the great parties that go on.
But honestly, is it really just overrated, are there rez's that are better or quieter though, for studying/quiet purposes
Just curious as I'm from Manitoba and UWO is the only external university I've applied to, and my mom knows it is a good school but being the great mom she is ... is a bit wary about the whole "party" social scene and notoriety of it!cheers

Honestly, I believe that if you want to party you will find someplace to party no matter where you go. I totally agree with the overrated title the UWO is a party school. That's not to say that you shouldn't go out now and than to have some fun! Balance is key!

Honestly, I visited a friend at Western in Saugeen residence a while back and I found the reputation to be well deserved. Things get pretty crazy up there.

True, but that's when earplugs and the library come in handy.

Every university has awesome parties. Every university has places you can go to study and get work done. I have friends at all different universities and I can assure you that a great time can be had at any one of them.

ive partied at UofT,Ryerson, Waterloo, Western, Queens and Mac. it's all the same everywhere you go, Western isn't overrated per se, jus other schools are underrated. it all depends on the image the school is tryin to portray. Western tries to portray a good student life and school spirit incorporated with academics. the first two tend to lead to the partying so go figure

The reputation is sort of self-fulfilling: some people go to Western because they think/know it is a "party school". Those people are likely partiers, so those partiers start parties and thus make Western a party school. Then there are people (from different universities) who come here thinking Western is a party school, they notice there are a few parties (just like there would be at other universities), and they think that confirms their thinking. Like bigbadsheep said, it isn't that Western is overrated, it is that a lot of schools are underrated (plus there probably is some truth to the stereotype).

Honestly, it shouldn't matter if a university or college is known as a "party" school. As long as you do well in school and keep up with all the work, then you should be able to have a little fun now and there smile

From the people who I talked to, who went to McMaster (a couple teachers and a student teacher of mine) said that it was basically a nice balance between party and study.

UWO students tend to fill Richmond St. on a Saturday night with drunk hooligans and shenanigans all around. but as someone else mentioned every university has party animals. the library at UWO is apparently really good tho.

McMaster i've noticed is a good combination of studying and partying whereas at Western, where I've had the opportunity to visit Saugeen and Huron and Essex residences as wlel as the Fanshaw college campus that is to s ay that LONDON is a party city, rather than Western being a party school

Yeah, it really depends on your personality, work/study habits, and the type of friends you associate with.

I think the "party" image at Western is because of Saugeen hall... most first year students are located there... so of course, that's where the whole reputation comes into place. But yeah, otherwise definitely overrated in comparison to other universities.

Also, I guess there's a tendency for people to think that universities in a more quieter, isolated area tends to have more parties.... because there's nothing to do? Haha.

Probably true. Most college students know Fanshawe as "Funshawe" because, like Western, it has the reputation of being a party school.

Western is the "True" Party School! Beyond a doubt, it has the best orientation "Frosh" week in the country! There isn't a dull moment, and you litterally get 4 hours of sleep a night for the week! I loved my orientation week, and would do it over again in a heart beat! In my first year, every one of my friends were msging me saying that they were bored and that not much was going on during their frosh week, (Guelph in particular), and I didn't have time to reply to them until a week later! I do however feel that the homecoming weekend is a little tamer here than at other schools. We obviously do the pancake keggers and the football game, with plenty of streakers, but we of course aren't tipping cars and starting fires, but I think that's a good thing! That kind of havoc diminishes school reputations.

I've heard the same about Western being a party school but don't let that have an impact on your decision! London is a great city!

I'm going to Western in the fall despite its rep as a party school. I mean it all boils down to the persons work ethic... its all about balance. A little partying and a lot of studying, and I should be just fine! smile

Every school is known to be able to party. Its not the matter of its overrated as a party school.. or not cause everty school parties just as much as the other. Study areas are probably contained in the library or in your room, and if its too loud there, deal with it or use the ear plugs method. Overall, every school ive been to is known to be loud one time or another.

haha I just don't want her to worry! But I think everyone is right - you'll find a party if you want to regardless of where you go! Do you know where you plan on going, fellow winnipeger? I still haven't made a decision just yet but I am waiting to hear back from UWO from their scholarship program soon!
