I have been accepted to both UBC and UVic, and I love both as schools. I like the campus atmosphere and the friendliness of UVic, they even sent me a hand written Christmas card! I like the science programs at UBC and te rep is world class. The problem with UBC is the money. It costs more than UVic and they are offering me less scholarship money than UVic but I really want to go there. So should I go to UBC and be broke, or go to UVic and miss out?

Hmm, that's a really tough situation you have there. But if you can make it work, I'd follow my heart and go to UBC. Sometimes, when you commit to doing something because you have your heart set on it, obstacles may come up but they also may resolve. I find that when I am really stressing out about something and I don't know what decision to make I just go with my gut. Sometimes, you just have to trust that things will work out fine. As well, there are always scholarships to apply for on this web site!

That's definately a tough call, but if there is one thing I've learnt from my first year experience, go where you really want to go regardless of the cost. I chose the school I could afford and I feel like I missed out on going to the university I wanted to go to. You can always do loans and apply for bursaries, it might be a lot of money to pay back later but if it's what you really want I'd go for. So I say UBC might be your best choice.

Go with what you want..

From a finance point of view, think of your future earnings and cashflows. It can all be logically calculated to be worth it. You are probably a more important asset than your cash. Your personal skills will dictate your life career. Might as well put everything you got into it, fix the cash problem later once you've settled.

maybe there is a reason the school you wouldnt have initially chosen is the cheaper more appealing choice... maybe its someones way of getting you to try something you otherwise wouldnt have!

Go to UBC. You probably won't feel as happy at Vic and you might not do as well. Although you might be broke now and for a few years, if you go to UVic you'll regret not following your heart.

Unfortunately, this is a decision only you can make. I went through the exact same struggle a couple weeks ago (I really wanted to go to McGill, but other universities were offering me more money), but I definitely feel as though a huge weight has been lifted off my soul now that I've decided to attend the school of my choice. Money is definitely an issue for me, but keep in mind, there are many options out there like external and internal scholarships, financial aid, student loans and community funding. If you think that you can survive on practically nothing, meaning that you may need to give up some things like going to the movies or going out to dinner or buying that new jacket you've been pining for, then go for UBC. If you honestly believe that you will not be able to afford life's necessities (i.e. food), go to UVic. Don't forget, if your financial situation turns around, you can always transfer from UVic to UBC (or vice versa) so long as you keep your grades up. Good luck! smile
