The school counsellors never have any answers for me concerning scholarships. They keep telling me that all I have to do for scholarships is apply because many go unapplied for. What I want to know is where are these scholarships that no one knows about? Where do I apply for them? Websites would be helpful!

Hey! Check out the university/college websites, they will have a page devoted to scholarships and bursaries, also check out local business or if you have a part time job somewhere maybe they hand out a scholarship. It might not be much, but its more then you had before right!

I wasn't happy with the academis advisors at my school. They are all students that don't feel like being there which makes it impossible to pick classes that you need. I have a lot of friends that were screwed over as a result of the classes they were advised to take.

My highschool was very helpful when it came to scholarships and bursaries. A friend of mine filled out the forms for all the scholarships at my school and because not enough people applied she ended up getting the university one instead of the college one. I guess it's just luck and hoping that other people didnt bother applying for them. Definately check out the website for the school your thinking of going too, I ended up getting $1000 this year because they offered bursaries. Good luck!

I agree; academic advisers, especially at the university level, seem to be completely useless. Just in and out and collect their paycheck. It's sad because there are genuinely people out there that need help. I remember asking my adviser for help with law school, and all I got was "well, ask the law school people". Horrible, simply horrible. Questions that pop up was: how, where, who exactly do I contact and why couldn't you help me?

I work in a few high schools in a few different divisions. I have found some school councelors work hard at promoting scholarships and know their stuff while others focus on guidence counselling as opposed to academic. It is a difficult job to do when they are the only worker and are learning lots on the go. It seems to be a bit of luck as to the counselor your school has.

From my experience at University, I've found it is really easy to get help sorting out the rules and regulations of the university calendar from the designated academic advising center, however, getting advice on career choices from department heads and assigned faculty academic advisors is hopeless! WE NEED MORE MENTORS.

the guidance at my school is quite amazing...my counselor is phenomenal at her job and is so helpful....however, with this whole scholarship thing, I haven't found out about many of those "unknown" scholarships either... anyone know where they could be found?

Personally my guidance counsellors are great. They do an amazing job and the things they don't know they usually find out for me. If someone knew of an 'unknown' scholarship, why would they tell everyone about it. It would only lessen their chances of getting that scholarship.

If we knew where these scholarships were, they wouldn't go unapplied for Check out the Student Awards database, and a lot of companies who usually send out and offer scholarships. Then again, even some advertised scholarships go so under-used because of the requirements. Accepted to Carleton University, Honours Bachelor of Arts in Law

It's a toughie. My school has advisers divided by alphabet and I certainly got the nicest one but she isn't very helpful when it comes to university or scholarships.

Ha! "guidance" counsellors, I swear I haven't gotten one useful piece of advice in all of my high school experience! But meh, I really can't complain since I've been recommended for every scholarship I asked to be recommended for. Currently I've begun stalking my guidance counsellor since apparently my school has like 40 grand to give away and I wanna chunk! Pourquoi?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jf94uiIbItg

Check out a bunch of websites like this one, also scholarshipscanada.com. and from what I've heard, you can apply for scholarships that you think you might now qualify for and get them anyways because no one applied. over 7Mil dollars goes unclaimed each year in canada

The problem is, that 7Mil of unclaimed money, is in scholarships that are impossible to find, which is why no one finds them, and why they go unclaimed . All the ones on these sites won't be in this position. Your best bet (if you don't have the resume for the bigger ones on these sites) is to find smaller ones from local companies etc.

Eco I think you are right. You seem like a very smart person. Have you won anything?

Your best bet is to think up a list of any activities, organisations and companies you or your parents are affiliated with, then check the websites to see if there are any scholarships offered. This probably makes up a huge chunk of the unadvertised scholarships. Some of them are in trust funds and quite content to sit for a few years without selecting a student.
As for my guidance counsellors, I think I hit the jackpot. They keep informed with the scholarships and send announcements when certain info comes in, and have contacts with most universities. With the size of our school though, they can't babysit us through the application process for school and scholarships but rather give us the info and advice and then send us out.

Yeah the thing with the guidance counsellor, when I ask for 'guidance' from him with courses, he literally sighs out loud and roles his eyes.
