Okay, I just want to ask (and please don't tear me to shreds for this): why is there so much hype about McMaster? Is it really the best program in Canada? Or is it just because it's so hard to get into?
I'm definitely putting myself on the road to Med school, and I want to go on to the States in four years. I'm just worried nobody outside of Canada will have heard of McMaster Health Sciences.
I've been so dead set on Mac for the past year and a half, and now I'm horribly indecisive. This is the decision that's going to affect the rest of my life, and I know Health Sci's great, but I'm so nervous that it's going to be the wrong decision.
After wanting it for so long, it is difficult to contemplate not wanting it. Objectively, however... I need help. Convince me?

At least people from this forum who said that they'd decline the offer ( There were few i recall), I'm pretty sure u guys would do
it ASAP so that other people know what is going on and what's their chance of getting in. If u did decline,, we'd appreciate you
guys to write a comment here to cheer other people,, well it's up to you guys,, but anyway,, it is apprecitated (I got accepted to
BHS too btw) sry but who's "we" in the sentence, I'm pretty sure u guys would do it ASAP so that other people know what is going on and what's their chance of getting in. If u did decline,, we'd appreciate you guys to write a comment here to cheer other people ?

It's the only undergraduate non-professional program that I know of that actively involves its students in problem based learning from 1st year. Some liberal arts programs in the United States do this, but not to the extent that the BHSc program does and especially not studies into the field of health care whether from a molecular to a large-scale epidemiological level. Also, the tight-knit student/faculty community that is built around this program is one of a kind in Canada.

Can someone tell me the date by when the currently accepted applicants are supposed to notify Sonya about whether they are going to accept or decline?

Copying and pasting a post from several pages back: Congratulations in receiving an admission offer to the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) Program at McMaster University for September 2008! As you know this program is limited in enrolment. In order to gauge the number of acceptances we may receive, we would appreciate hearing from you as to whether you plan to accept our admission offer, possibly by Monday, May 12th. On the basis of this we may have better answers for the hundreds of applicants who did not yet receive an offer. Please forward your email response to Sonya Brellisford at brellis@mcmaster.ca. The university is quite well known for its science faculty, and BHSC in particular, even in RUSSIA. Of all places. So I think you'll be fine in the states, if people in russia know about this program. Schulich BBA 2012

Ok this is a question for any current Mac Health Sci students:
Do you really not have any exams? And if so, do you think that this has benefited your learning? It seems to me that no exams sounds amazing, but could be a difficult way for some people to learn.

the no exam thing depends on the hth sci course you're in.
in first year, you'll have inquiry, cell bio and psychobio. inquiry has interviews in lieu of tests/exams, cell bio DID have an exam component this year (but there are tests, assignments, journals to do as well), and psychobio had journals and essays and participation, all in lieu of an exam.
I think it greatly benefited my learning, because there's a lot more you'll learn than just content in these courses (though you do learn a lot of that!)

uhh nope! just take what interests you. I found the transition between first year and high school to be a bit rough (as does everyone else) and that my 2nd semester was a lot more hectic than 1st... I took a less demanding course in 2nd semester to help me since I was still adjusting and had a lot of other stuff to do. The course was Math 1A03, which is gr. 12 math all over again. a majority of hthscis took this course actually... so it's something worth considering.

did any of you go to may@mac??? i went to the second presentation at 11:30, and the dean placed a lot of importance on effective communication and retaining knowledge...
right now, my style of learning is pretty much through pure memoriztion. needless to say, i don't really remember anything after i learned it. i got 100% on the past two physics tests, but when my friend from another school asked me a question about the stuff i studied two units ago, i had no idea.
i really want to retain what i learn instead of just forgetting it after the test. does the healthsci program help students learn to retain their knowledge? and is the inquiry method effective?

STOP freaking out/worrying so much about university... you're in gr.11...so relax. trust me, you want to NOT worry about this stuff for as long as possible. darn. i want to be in gr.11 all over again. the more u think about it, the more you'll become uh, emotionally atteched. and knowing health sci, the chances of getting in are not that great. you'd only get disappointed. why do that to yourself? also, pure memorization isn't going to get you anywhere. especially not hthsci. and if you can 1. get 100% on two physics tests, and 2. do it from memorization ALONE, i'd say your physics teacher is way too easy. if you want to retain what you 'learn', then really LEARN instead of memorizing. that was some pretty useless advice. /rant over.
