Buy a MacBook.
They are more than worth the extra money.

/agree

MacBook or even MacBook Pro if you can afford it, (I can't) is really worth it. Apple's computers are so so much more user friendly and everything syncs well since they make all the major parts (hardware + software) as opposed to a PC... Microsoft makes the software (Vista sucks) and Dell or some other company makes the hardware. Also you will never have to worry about viruses.

I was thinking about that, it'd be nice to make some drawings once in a while for fun too. But on the other hand, having a tablet really jacks up the price on the laptop and I want to use it for some gaming too. Anyways, I type a lot faster than I can write.

Depends what you want to do with the laptop, how much you want to spend, what you're looking for and of course, your preferences.

What OS does it run?

ASUS is just another manufacturer like HP or Toshiba, albeit they make MUCH better laptops.

You can run anything you want on ASUS laptops, Vista, XP, Linux, Ubuntu, OS X (although there'll be a few problems here and there since its not native)

Dell
HP
Sony
Toshiba
ASUS
Acer
Lenovo
Alienware (although now it's part of Dell)
Apple
LG
Panasonic
etc. etc

HEADS UP FOR ANYONE JUST WANTING A TAKING NOTES PC. Take a look at the Eee Pc by Asus. It's only $400, run's windows XP (as well as other unix based operating systems) and as long as all you want is word processing and using the internet, it's THE best bang for the buck without a doubt.

I just bought a Toshiba and Love it!! I am not very computer smart but have found that it is realy easy to use.
I just don't know yet how well it will work in University, because it is kind of slow at times.

i'm very happy with my compaq pressario from future shop. it was for a very good price and came with everything i was looking for. from what i've heard, dell is not that great of a computer company. i've also been told that a duo core processor is the best option.

I've got an awesome toshiba one. I bought it from my friend after he bought himself an alienware computer, so I got it pretty cheap and it works great.

I'm planning on buying a Fujitsu LifeBook laptop sometime in May when they come in Penryn processors.

For those buying laptops, don't buy more than 15.4" screen size, otherwise, you'll regret it. They're 6lbs+

Asus laptops drain your battery fast because of its nVIDIA video card..I think they only come with dedicated video cards
Acer laptops are made with cheap materials...will not last long
Toshiba laptops are decent (Satellite series), but the only 14.1" available with this brand is Tecra M9 and it overheats fast..
Apple laptops...I'm bias...I don't like them in general
HP laptops...I've only tried their business laptops and they're quite durable
Voodoo, Alienware, Sager laptops are so over-priced...
Dell laptops are decent (Latitude and Vostro series)...exception of Inspiron series..
Lenovo laptops are durable..but I think they're overrated and ugly, but I still like them

Some laptops you might consider of buying are..
Lenovo Thinkpad T61
Dell Latitude 630
HP Pavilion dv2700t
HP Compaq 6910p

There's a decent laptop on sale in Futureshop:
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10098998&logon=&langid=EN

The battery life in this site is misleading, it's actually around 2 hours. I would buy it, but it doesn't have Penryn processor worry

An HP notebook is the way to go for laptops. They are reliable and dont have a lot of problems.

the tablet is pretty pricey but i think if lectures were to have diagrams and stuff, i'd prefer a tablet =\

I'm not ThomasInCanada, but you can ask the store if they offer student discount

It looks like you're interested in a Macbook? Check out the following site:

If you're talking about the Sony's VAIO CR series...I don't really recommend it because the battery is loose, it's not secure...and it can interfere when you're typing essays or whatever because you can lose your files without saving them. Other than that, it's a good laptop

I don't really know what you want a laptop to have or do..so I'm assuming you want something light-weight and strictly for multi-tasking such as using word processing, msn messenger, browsing the Internet, etc at once?

Some laptops you might want to look into are (all of them are 13.3" to 14.1" screen sizes)..
Sony's VAIO SZ Series
Toshiba Satellite U305
Toshiba Tecra M8
Lenovo Thinkpad T61
Lenovo Thinkpad X300
Asus W7S
HP Compaq 6910p
HP Pavilion dv2700t
Dell XPS 1330
Dell Latitude 630
Dell Vostro 1400

If you want a laptop to last as long as possible, make sure it's with GMA X3100 and not ATI or nVIDIA video cards and with at least a standard 6-cell battery. You also want a laptop that has WiFi a/g/n (for free access to Internet if your school's library offers it or even in Starbucks, it's free!) and maybe bluetooth (if you intend in using a wireless mouse, connecting your cell with the laptop, etc.)
