Having a job was never really an option for me because I play on 4 different sports teams for my school, plus I'm on Student Council, and play on a pick up volleyball team on top of everything else. I gave up thinking about getting a normal job, so I applied for the Canadian Forces. Currently I work with the army.. and its great. I only have to work one night a week, and one weekend a month. Then in the summer I get to work full time for the military and it pays incredibly good. So not only can I work my sporting schedule around the one thursday night a week that I work, but i also got to meet lots of new people, stay in shape, and have a lot of fun at the same time.

if there is a kumon in your area, i would suggest applying for work there
it is a good atmosphere and looks great on a resume
also, hours are short and usually during good hours

^ i work at kumon currently, its a nice place but it does take some time out of your school life. I suggest working only one day a week for high school students.

There are also jobs available that are short-term or jobs you can do at home or online - but be careful with these...there's a lot of scams, especially when it comes to 'work from home' jobs!
Another good part-time job while taking courses is tutoring...especially if you can help tutor classmates, because then you are learning as you go, too. 'They say' that you learn concepts more thoroughly when you are teaching it to someone else. Tutoring pays well and can be very flexible.

I work at Wendy's and they give you an availability chart every week. You fill it out and put what hours you can work and they are really good with accomadating you. The hourly rate depends on the province. I recommend checking it out.

Staples has a large calendar which you can take days off on... they don't love it when you do though, and if they already have you planned (sometimes 2 weeks in advance!), then it is REALLY hard to change it. My older job at a rural-area resort was great for getting days off. Just ask a few days beforehand and they cover for you (on some occasions getting wait staff have to do some kitchen work that you would have had to do ). My first job was ok, but not great about days off. just ask, and you would likely get it though.

barista is a great job. Not much physical exertion, not as degrading/smelly/greasy/messy as fast food, customers are nicer (i love the regulars), tips are nicer, not as busy, less possibility of coworkers who are total druggies/drunks, and possibility of free drinks.

I would have probably tried to go for this one... but I don't even drink coffee or tea, etc, so I never bothered to learn (weird, I know)

Working in retail is the best (especially cash registar) cause you can take an 'advancement' on your pay cheque. Plus, most places give you discounts.

I used to work 30+ hours everyweek in gr.11 , my grades stayed about the same but lol I had no life whatsoever
Oh yeah, i'm really sick of my job... I heard starbucks pays quite well, I know someone whose making over $12 an hour and she just started

I don't plan to work more than one shift a week for the first year. However, I have the benefit of living at home, not to mention having the first two years tuition covered through various scholarships and grandparents contributions. Although, I would like to get a job doing something at the university (they tend to be flexible with hours)
