or ppl in your room or on your floor? I know it seemed to me that most people had roomates in programs that were at least related. Like maybe someone in Physics was with someone in Chemistry. That didn't apply to me (CS with Arts), then again there were very few other girls in CS and we probably all had different rez preferences. But then I can't speak for how they assign roomates at Queen's. Floor mates should be a mix unless you pick a special floor for people from your major (which some schools have). In terms of who becomes your main hangout group, it will probably depend. In my case it sorta became neither; I started hanging out with the rez friends of a guy in my program after first semester.

In residence, the people I hung out with were from all different faculties. Most of the people I still hang out with are from residence but are in my courses. I rarely ever hang out with my first-year roommate anymore, even though we were good friends, because he is in a completely different program and he lives with people he knows from HS.
I'd say that is how it is with most other people too. In first year, there isn't really a bias towards people in your program, but as soon as you move out of rez, that changes. Of course, if you are in some small program, you will have no option but to find friends by some other means.

My sister is in her third year of university. For her first two years, she stayed in residence. The people she stayed in residence with first year, are now her best friends, and she now lives with them. Most people become friends with the people they stay in res with, but there are lots of other chances to make friends elsewhere such as groups, clubs, and more!

personally for me it was neither. i hang out with both floor mates and random friend i met from different rezs. join clubs and sports

Bah I keep on having the weirdest dream that this guy from one of my classes (I'm a high school senior) ends up in the room next to mine at uni... and trust me, I DON'T want him there. lol
But, anyways... when I filled out the rez form there were a few options... some buildings or floors specialize in a certain area, and since I'm headed off to uOttawa they asked whether I wanted to be in a room with a francophone...

^ Four people (two groups of two) from my high school were roomed next to one another in residence... so you never know...

you definitely bond with your roommates right from the start... no guarantee you're going to be in the same program or classes though. hopefully you get along with them, most people i know do find they get really close with their roommates from the start. people on the floor have bonded really a lot since after the december break and reading week break we went away together! it was great
