I just did a research on McGill's residence today, and I found interest in: 475 Sherbrooke West, The Greenbriar, and New Residence Hall. My initial concerns were about having a washroom in the room, and if possible, a single room (which is unlikely because I do not have a scholarship from McGill).

The McGill website, of course, does not provide all the information I need (or I simply cannot find it):
1. Availability of parking space, and the price.
2. The distance to campus (If possible, within walking distance).
3. Study environment (I need a quiet one).
4. Room space (I have a bunch of crap, and I'm looking to buy a big study desk if possible to put in the room).

It is quite possible that I do not get accepted to one of the above residences. If there is one similar to what I'm looking for, please recommend it.

Another thing is what happens after the annual rent is over (April 30, 2010). Can I continue living on campus, or does the summer break begin, and what makes me eligible to live on campus for another year?

Thanks.

If you want a single room, don't go to New Rez (all the rooms are doubles, but they do have their own washrooms). Most of the other residences have majority single rooms (shared bathrooms, however).

1. To my understanding, parking is available for students at New Rez, even if you're living elsewhere. I'm pretty sure it's pricey.

2. All of the residences are walking distance to campus (except Solin Hall). New Rez is a bit of a walk, Greenbriar is right across the street from the campus gates on rue université.

3. They have libraries for a reason. Residences have study areas, but aren't always quiet.

4. Rooms are small. Also, they're furnished. Don't bring unneeded things, and don't being a desk.

As for summer, you'd be on your own to find an apartment. I'm pretty sure all the residences close for the summer and only Solin, RVC, and New stay open as hostels for visitors. In response to your question about second year rez, why would you want to? Renting an apartment is much cheaper. Although, I believe there are options for students who wish to stay in rez.

Accepted: Windsor-Biochem & Chemistry + Physics, McMaster Life Sci. UWO-Biomed, Waterloo-Biomedical Sci, Guelph-Medical Sci. & Chemical Physics, McGill Life Sci & Physical Sci.
Rejected: McMaster-Health Sci.
Going to: Windsor - Chemistry.

Quick question again because I have to fill out my residence application. I'm probably stuck in a double room because I want a washroom in the room. So it boils down to 475 Sherbrooke West and New Residence Hall. Does anyone know which one is better? I'm thinking of 475 Sherbrooke West because it has the option for large double room, that's if I'm lucky enough to get it. There's the thing about walking distance to campus too, Sherbrooke is 2 blocks while New is 5.

Basically, which one has nicer rooms?

Thanks.

Should've at least tried to apply for scholarship... disgust

1. Most rezes have parking nearby, though I have no idea why you'd want a car in Montreal or want to pay the price to park a car in Montreal. Everything is within walking distance and public transit is excellent. Parking costs, on average, $15-20 per day (pricier in some areas), so that's 8 x 30 x 15 = $3600 just to park a car.

2. All rezes are walking distance to campus except Solin which is 4 metro stops away. Same for hypothetical parking.

3. Avoid Molson or possibly New. McConnell, Gardner, and perhaps MORE houses would be good for this.

4. You already get a desk, a chair, a fridge, and a bed. The big rooms are probably in the hotel-style.

You can continue living on campus over the summer by paying rent to the university, though the vast (VAST) majority of students find their own housing after first year as it's cheaper and more awesome.

Damnnn, so 475 is the newest rez... That hotel was on strike for ages. Anyway, Greenbriar is closest, but they had mice problems all of last semester that no one cared to deal with properly even with countless complaints. It is a pretty nice apartment and the proximity is amazing. New Rez has single rooms, actually, and some lucky people who were supposed to get double rooms end up with singles, and if you go on waiting lists you have a chance to eventually get one.

1. Parking space... Why??? You don't need a car in montreal. Seriously. You are better off without one. But if you must, on the open market parking spots around the mcgill ghetto are around $100~150 a month. The parking lot under new rez at LaCite is like $20 a day

2. distance to campus.. they are all walking distance, 12 minutes tops unless you are going to the other side of campus. More Houses, Dio and Prez are also across the street from the campus. New rez is furthest out of the one you are interested in. The only rez that is far is Solin which is a few metro stops away.

3. Greenbriar is your best bet for study space if you get a studio for yourself. New Rez is horrible for quiet - honestly, for any of the rez's, you may need to go to the library to study (and even then it is loud)

4. They furnish the room for you with desks...

It seems like you prefer to get an apartment for yourself instead. There are many nice ones on the west side of campus that might suit your needs. Many are pretty much soundproof or at least quiet, offer indoor parking and close to campus. Of course you won't meet as many people if that is something else you are looking for.

Oh yeah and you can stay for a few days to weeks at McGill residences during the summer (For New Rez it was like $50/night), but after a certain point you pay "Summer Rates" Because Mcgill rents the residences out to the public over the summer and it's pretty high.

Like McG2012 said, you will probably find an apartment by then..

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply. I'm parting with my car, as it is too expensive to have in Montreal, and I'd be better off take a Taxi when I need to. For the first year, I actually prefer living on campus because I want to meet new people. After looking at some reviews for the McGill-maintained Sherbrooke, there were complaints about bed bugs from the people who lived there over the summer. So, I'm pretty set on living at New Rez. Hopefully I'll get a single room @_@...

I'll probably live off-campus the next year as my parents are looking to buy a condo near the campus--then I can have my car again.

Once again, many thanks.

Edit: disgust I'm a little worried that the desk won't fit a desktop PC and a laptop...

1. Why do you need 2 computers?
2. Cabs are expen$ive. A cab ride from the train station to Upper Rez (like a 15 minute walk... downhill) is $10.

1. Because I already have 2, backup, and I don't want to part with my MBP or iMac.
2. Yet, that's still cheaper than what I have to pay for parking. Note I said "need to."

Douglas is probably the best single-room option if you did not get a scholarship from McGill. I think its a bit of a walk to class because its on a hill/mountain that overlooks the campus.

Most popular rez after New Rez. Although new rez actually has a higher percentage of people that move out of new rez then douglas. On the hill. Has 25 double rooms? and underground tunnels connecting the 8 "houses". It has its own cafeteria that some say resembles "Harry Potter". On a 5 day meal plan but last year they didn't serve lunch so you have to go to BMH (on the hill) or RVC (not on hill).

I've seen New Rez, unless you like sleeping in a hotel room, you don't want to go there. If you don't mind hotel rooms, then its fine really. Personally I dont like staying in hotel rooms any longer than I have to, but then again, you have the washroom, and you have a lot of other ammenities in the building. It's a solid option and all the people I talked to who were there really liked it. I'd recommend the Sherbrooke one though.

There are private student residences downtown. Check 515 St. Catherines, St. Cathy's, and Trylon Apartments... there are a few others, but if you google search it you should be able to find it

I've learned that having a washroom in your room and shared with 1 other person means that you can hear everything your roommate does in the washroom.

I can't speak for the specifics of the McGill residences, but personally I'd rather go for a shared washroom down the hall.

FAQ's:
1. Will I get in? See: electronicinfo.ca for Ontario schools. If you have a couple percent above the marks there and it's not looking at supplementary, the answer is almost certainly yes.
2. Anything else: Google it before asking.

Thanks a lot for replying. I'm a bit wary of going to Sherbrooke because people who lived there over the summer have complained about bed bugs and poor building maintenance. From what I have read, Sherbrooke does not have a games room and some other facilities in New Rez. But, it is closer to the campus, so that could save me some time.

If possible, can you please ask your friends if any of my concerns are true. Also, are there actually "large" double rooms available as stated by McGill? How likely is it to get a large double room? And which building looks newer (New Rez or Sherbrooke)?

Yep, I'm pretty comfortable living in a hotel room because I spend most of my summers living in one. Of course, home is a lot better.

Right now, I'm just praying to be put in a single room in New Rez by some miracle. @_@

thanks for the replies!
can anyone tell me what the atmospheres like at the douglas rez?
i'm looking for a balance between academics (quiet rooms?) and a good social experience

are there any stereotypes usually associated with douglas hall?
(i.e i've heard molson is the party rez)
the kinds of people?
the types of events?

alsoo, if youve recieved an entrance scholarship does that means you get your first choice of residence?

and man...the whole underground tunnel connection thing sounds sweet smile

A LOT of scholarship winners in douglas but don't let that fool you. It is never quiet. They love to party and from what I've heard blast music all night long, and a lot pot smokers in the tunnels.

And fengshui I've heart of bugs in solin, greenbriar, and new rez as well. They're everywhere when a bunch of dirty kids are contained in such close quarters.

After spending a year in rez at McGill, one begins to question as to whether pot is actually illegal.

do you guys think that it is possible to have the "whole univ experience" without staying in a big rez like bmh, new rez, etc, but actually staying in a smaller rez like dio/pres? or its a rez without parties?

okay so I just went to visit the residences and I find RVC is probably the nicest but I dont know about the all girl thing. I love the location though! I just feel like it would be secluded and I would not meet as many people. Has anyone lived there that can let me know how they liked it? or is it better to live in the upper residences to get the whole university experience and maybe meet more people?
I also need a quietish place to study and im not much of a library person!
