Tuition can be so depressing. It is unreal how it jumps every year. Not to mention that the more it does increase the more difficult is for more people to receive higher education.

The answer depends mainly on the province, but also what school and program you are looking at.

two years of school has me about $80 000 in debt -- the cost of following your dreams is incredibly ridiculous.

$80,000 sounds like an exaggeration, unless it's in addition to a four year degree.

Is it merited, though? Do universities absolutely have to charge that much?

$80 000?!?! Are you studying out of province, or doing grad studies? That's HIGH, I estimate to only be about $40 000 in the hole after I'm done my four years at school.

Yeah, I don't think 80 000 will be my situation after only two years considering they say that it's about 20 grand a year, right?
I sure hope so, but in the end, it's worth it... We'll be able to get jobs afterwards! colors
Well, lets hope this bursary thing pans out, i need the cash so I don't have to be in that much dept! I want to start my life off positively.. not in despair! razz

the easiest way to make university affordable s to stay at home for university. That way you are only paying tuition costs and books. There would be no need to pay for dorms.

Unfortunately when you live in a small town that doesn't have a university, one of your only options is to stay in residence. I'm just hoping the rewards university offers will surpass the costs!

I wish we could just go to university for $25 a year like elementary school. Tuition is sooo dreadful. I couldn't even imagine living in a residence. At UPEI residence is about $15,000 a year and that's considered a low amount compared to other universities across Canada! It's just crazy.

school is really expensive. i want to go to UBC Kelowna and it will roughly cost with everything said and done, 16-17,000 for me per year. its ridiculous. i hate owing money or knowing i'll be in debt for a very long time afterwards

Tuition rates are different across the country. Location and program of study are just two variables that determine how much you will pay. It is concerning, however, that the tuition paid by full-time undergraduate students has increased on average at a faster rate than that of inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index. The University of Guelph has proposed to increase its undergraduate tuition costs for the 2008-2009 academic year by 4.5%, and graduate student tuition by 8% for entering students. Why do students have to make up the funds, why not public money? Rather than put pressure on the government, university admin takes the easy route- tuition. The onus is on student representatives to maintain pressure on university administration and the provincial government to keep universities accessible. Exercise your right to freedom of speech and let your university administration know if you are unhappy or concerned about proposed tuition increases. If nobody talks, they'll just keep on picking our pockets.

$15,000 would be the cost of attending a year including tuition, residence, meal plan, and possibly extras on top of it, not the cost of residence alone.

Apparently UPEI just cut their tuition 10%.

When said above that the best way to do university i to stay at home, i agree. But even as also said its hard when you live in a small town. Look into the university you want to go to and see if they have a correspondance choice. Thats what im having to do bc we can't afford living expenses and the collegeI'm goimg to is too small to have res. So im staying home not having to worry about paying living expenses and working and going to school. in the end im hoping not to be too much in debt I also already have a really good school fund my parents set up for me when i was born.

I know with where I'm going (Western) it's like 6 or 7 grand this year...which sucks.
But as long as you have good grades and apply for scholarships out the ass, you should get a lot of help financially. Don't worry about it!! Just enjoy it smile
