it is really true that during first year, you get fat big time! so, my advice for you guys is to watch out what you eat and dare not to tell yourself "oh screw the diet, i need food!" indeed, there would be several instances that you would not have any choice but to eat junk food since no other foods are available and because caf food are not good. always remember to at least exercise twice a week. be active and join a lot of activities and sports!

It's all a matter of self motivation. You don't have to stop eating in order to maintain your weight; some Universities offer free gym memberships to all their students, so it's not costing you anything for a membership, and for students living on campus it's even easier because it is within walking distance. Don't be lazy, get your butts off the couch, or take a break from studying and clear your mind on the treadmill or lifting some weights.

I don't think it's just self-motivation. You need self-perserverance to carry out exercising every week without your parents nagging you to do it. Besides cafe food isn't the most healthy food on earth. So I reccommend cutting down on the fries, burgers, and junk food and eat more fruits and veggies. Besides, you get enough exercise walking to and from classes if the campus is big like UT or Waterloo.

but for some people it is hard and always has been hard to keep a low weight. slow metabolism for example. but if you can work out and eat healthy without skrewing up the diet once then your a stronger person then i am. i love junk food.

today is the tomorrow that i was worried about yesterday

I agree tho that I have definitely had weight issues since I started university. Its been up and down constantly. When it's close to exams I lose weight cuz of stress but during the semester I gain weight cuz ppl are always making nice study snacks and so on. What I've done, is bougt a lot of veggies and ranch dipping and walking to waork and stuff. It seems to be helping a bit.

There is always intrameral sports as well! Grab a few friends and join one of them! They aren't so competitive at a lower level and they are lots of fun as well as a good way to release stress! And if you're not one to get sweaty, join an easier one with less running like badminton or ultimate. There's usually some kind of walking club or hiking club at universities too.

Personally I've gained 25 pounds during my first year which I'll get off in the summer. What did it for me was big time stress and staying up late doing work. Sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done so I would stay up until 3 most nights finishing things. This screws up your eating patters as you eat later than normal when your metabolism is pretty much non existant. Stress also leads to emotional eating and the kinds of foods that are most convenient on campus are not the best for you. Little extensions of how many calories you take in here and there add up very fast. So don't think the only people who gain weight in university are just stupid and go nuts and don't exercise. It depends on your personal body type, how you handle stress, and what routine you get yourself into. I exercise all the time, I'm a certified personal trainer so I'm very into fitness. So it can happen to any one big grin

My advice is to just stay in a healthy routine, don't fall victim to the nap monster and get into an unnatural sleeping and eating routine. Exercise as much as you can of course and watch the little things. It's rarely eating huge meals of bad food all the time that leads to freshman weigh gain, its the slow accumulation of small bad choices that you make that lead to weight gain.

Don't worry too much though, almost everyone puts on weight first year (girls anyway, guys have killer metabolism so they tend to not gain as much if at all). You can take it off in the summer and it shouldn't be a main worry big grin

-limit alcohol consumption
-experiment with a variety of caf foods, especially in the green department
-stay away from the excess of grease
-walk, run, swim - morning is the best for weight loss
-get adequate sleep
-snack instead of binge
- and remember muscle weighs more than fat

An important thing is to watch your studying food. If I'm pulling an all-nighter then I might have rice cakes, which aren't healthy but aren't loaded with calories either. But I knew a guy who had chocolate and beer, and not surprisingly he put on a lot of weight.

Stay away from all the greasy food. It's easier said than done, but still. Also remember that alcohol is full of calories. Especially beer.

I will get into jogging myself to keep fit. I've applied to Mac and Ottawa, and both have nice jogging areas. Plus gonna try and get into the gym on campus about twice a week. I already have a decent exercise schedule, situps and push ups every night keeps me pretty in good shape. Note that I eat anything, junk food and healthy. I try to stay on the healthy side but sometimes go a week on caf food at high school for example and with this nightly exercise I still stay fit. I think I have a good metabolism though, and I'm a regular sized guy and try to eat smaller things more often than big things three times a day. I heard somewhere its better to eat 6 times a day, eating say a sandwich and chips and a drink instead of eating two burgers and fries for dinner. Just an example lol.

My brother did get kinda fat his first year in university. But he was just sitting in his room and lost his workout schedule. Now he goes to a gym twice a week and is in great shape. Still eats whatever though lol.

I know that when I started university I gained some weight :s people just have to be somewhat conscious of what they are eating and try to fit in some sort of exercise and it shouldn't be a problem!

Live at home that way you can get a real meal and not just mcdonalds all the time. Get a membership to a gym or continue any sports you played in high school

It's really hard to eat well when you've only got the cafeteria food as an option, and not enough money to go off campus for a decent meal. It's best to eat vegetarian meals a few times a week cause excessive meat can lead to weight gain, as well as health problems later in life. You don't have to eat meat everyday to be healthy cause a lot of other foods have protein and that kind of thing, even if they're not complete proteins.

Most university facilitys consist of a gym. You have to have self-motivation also, if you want it bad enough, you will do it. If you have low self esteem, you have to remember that, chances are the person running on the tredmill next to you is doing this for the same reason you are. If you are already physicaly fit, this shouldn't be a problem for you, you have already developed the motivation to have sucessfully become fit, now its keeping yourself there, and only improving. Constantly ask yourself, if you can do certain tasks, if the answers no, push yourself until you feel you can. Make yourself goals, and fulfill them. You can only do it yourself, no one can make you smile .. and always eat healthy!

Where i go we are able to make our own meals which really helps - no greasy caf food for me. I would suggest getting involved in sports or something - and activity that forces you to get out and move around. also, most campuses have gyms - use them! And as for eating - do it, but eat healthy! maybe a salad instead of that pizza sometime? And leave the coke and take the water?

There are three university-owned sit-down restaurants on campus, a Pizza Hut and Subway down by Perth and Essex, a Swiss Chalet near Huron College, and a number of Timmy's, Pizza Pizzas, Mr. Subs, Pita Pitas, Manchu Woks, and a Harvey's in the UCC (and I know I'm leaving out something).

This is probably going to sound so stupid, but I used to do my homework on the treadmill (like reading and taking notes and whatnot). Obviously I wasn't running, I was kind of like slow jogging, but it was still exercise and I would go until I was done my homework, which some days was twenty minutes, other days an hour and a half. Ultimately though, it was exercise, as dorky as it may seem haha.
