I may be wrong, but I thought I read a gigantic list of things to bring to you with res posted by someone here a little while ago? If I am delusional, has anyone already concocted one and typed it up by any chance, just so I/others can get ideas? Cool.

Here's a couple of links I've found to be pretty useful in this category (they're much better organized than a forum post as well): http://acatnamedollie.livejournal.com/391.htmlhttp://www.webreader.com/download/college-moving.pdf University of Ottawa, Honours B.Sc Psychology '13

I'm totally seperating these lists into things that I need to bring, and things that I can buy once there.

Believe me, I considered. I did sort the 'categories' alphabetically, oooooooh how embarrassing. And I'm definitely not bringing everything on the list, I just listed everything that came to mind.

Heres the thing:
You THINK you need all this stuff now because you can picture all the situations you'd need it in...."oh what if this happens, then i need ___"
NO, you don't need it lol. If you bring everything you want to bring, I guarantee you that you wont even touch 20% of the stuff or maybe just use it a few times a year. Also consider that you're going to have a lot of friends on your floor. If you every need anything you don't have, you can ask to borrow. Usually you're so busy all the time you don't even have time for the luxury items you bring.
Its most likely that your tastes will change once you come to university and see what the trends there are like. Thus, you'll end up buying a lot of things. If you buy these things, where will you put them? You've already cluttered up your room with the useless stuff you've brought from home.
Basically, just bring the bare minimum to survive and some nice clothing, don't bring your whole room and every article of clothing you think you might wear on some occasion. You'll be buying lots off stuff after you move in.

I agree with ederoo. my room mates brought SO much stuff that they had to bring home suitcases full of stuff every break because they didnt' end up using most of their stuff. on the other side, I kinda underpacked, but it wasn't a problem at all since I could just pick up whatever i needed and however much I thought i'd need.
bare basics: clothes, outer wear, towels, bed sheets, pillow, etc, back pack, bags/luggage, computer stuff, alarm clock, flip flops, moneeeyyy add'l&optional (can also pick up in town pretty easily): writing utensils, notebooks, toiletries & laundry gear, binder/folder, fan, tupperware, novels, room deco, printer paper, ink, boots, sandals, etc, dishes, cutlery, food, mini-fridge
it really depends on what your res comes with. my res didn't have microwaves/kitchens, so i didn't really have a need for dishes, etc. but it didn't have air conditioning, so i needed the fan.

Here some mistakes you MAY make: - Paper: You'll probably end up bringing more paper than you need. If not, paper is cheap...and heavy. So don't bring a lot cuz it makes ur luggage heavy. - Clothes: I suggest only bringing your nicest and articles u know for sure you'll wear. People become a lot more self-conscious when it comes to style in university so you'll more than likely buy new clothing and you dont want your old clothing that you brought - but never wore, to take up space. Also, don't forget your winter clothes. - Medicine: Don't bring every type of medicine you can possibly think of for every kind of sickness. Chances are you might get a cold ONCE in your school year. You don't need a first aid kit in your room. - Books: Don't plan on bringing too many books that you'll read for leisure. They take up space and you probably won't touch them. You'll be too busy completing your assigned work, doing assigned readings, and trying to squeeze in social time in between. - Toiletries: You don't use as much toothpaste as you'd think. Theres probably a drug store really close by so just bring one of everything (shampoo, body wash, etc). - Money: Many of you probably think that you won't really be needing money because you have a meal plan, have everything you need, blah blah. Reality check...you'll be spending A LOT more than you'd think. As I said earlier, your style of living will change once you get into university so you'll want to buy new things and new additions to your room. Hmmm....this is all I can think of now, but I'll post more once they come to me. P.S. I know all of the above is true from personal experience lol....I made all those mistakes

I'm random, I know, but I want clarification on two things: - do university students really become more self-conscious with their clothing choices in university? Are you sure this wasn't unique to you, ederoo? (sorry, not trying to being rude) - do we really need to provide our own whiteboards w/ dry erase markers? When I visisted residences I saw the same generic whiteboards with the same markers attached to them, so I assumed they were provided.

Clothing is up to the person I guess. Its just that you're exposed to a lot more styles in university and a lot more shops that you may not have had in your hometown (depends where you go for Uni). Even if your style doesn't change, you'll always want to buy new clothes. I.e. buying more dressy clothes because you're in commerce, or maybe you're just trying to impress that girl lol
As far as I know, rooms don't come with accessories like whiteboards. To be honest, I don't even know why you would need one....people are only a text away these days. It may come in handy in your room though...but I prefer using post it notes.
