i'd say you also need to factor in what context it's being spoken of. industrially UW has one of, if not THE best reputation but in terms of masters degrees and phDs and such mcgill probably beats it. And in what country are you asking the question as well? Most people I know who are middle eastern or East asian say that people have already heard of UW and UT back where they come from. Keep in mind that how well something is known may not necessarily mean it's the best for you or your program in specific. I honestly had never heard of schulich before grade eleven until my business stream friends started talking about it. Now, from what i've gathered, it's one of the better places to go for that sort of study field.

Overall, I have to say either McGill or Queen's University because both universities are known for their selective admission processes.

There is absolutly no way to tell. There are so many highly regarded schools with awsome programs.
The ones that are considered the 'ivory towers' of Canada are U of BC, McGill, and perhaps U of T.
My highly baised opinon is to tell you that Mcmaster University is the best though.

Some relatives that I have out of the country considers McGill as an excellent university... It seems that it's well known all over the world, especially with their selective admission process. smile

Waiting on the world to change. ♥

Waterloo does the best on Maclean's reputational survey. Note that that survey has a dismal response rate of 7% overall with only 5% for the groups other than University Officials.

But it is the best out there to answer the question of which university is the most prestigious in Canada.

There's this top 100 world universities list from Shanghai Jiao Tong university, that lists McGill, U of T, UBC and McMaster as the only Canadian universities recognized. Pretty good right? Oh, and it is a recognized list.

If were to make a blanket statement, I would say that McGill is the post prestigious university in Canada. Waterloo is gaining in recognition as "Canada's MIT", which is to say that it is THE technical university in Canada.

However, as others have pointed out, there are several top-notch and competitive programs at many other universities.

honestly if you are going into your undergrad it doesn't matter at all. Prestige in my opinion only matters when you are getting a doctorate. In the real world, recuiters only care about marks and experience.

Your best bet is going to be checking out the surveys Maclean's Magazine does every year. You can't outright say "this university is best" but they can rank some programs and aspects of university as being better than others.

Not so sure about that, UofT still puts out about 5 times as much research as UW does and our papers are one of the top 5 most noted in North America (that's how you judge how good the research is.. if people are referencing to it around the world) so I'd say that UofT IS "Canada's MIT" lol
