I am a high school student and planning to go to a university in ontario ,,,probably McMaster and i had questions regarding the residence
what is the difference between on-campas and off-campas? is off-campas cheaper than on-campas? which would you recommend for a first year student?

Why not check out McMaster's website? I'm not even going to McMaster and I've found answers to all of your questions: 1. On-campus is... well... on campus. Off-campus is... off campus. 2. McMaster's On-Campus fees are listed here: http://housing.mcmaster.ca/Residence_Admissions/Fees.html. Off-campus is listed here: http://macoffcampus.mcmaster.ca/.3. Personally I'm going with my own apartment to be shared with my girlfriend. I don't want to be in residence with the new-person experience when I could have my own apartment with my girlfriend to help out with the expenses and other costs. hi vsp1990, please ignore "nice_guy". he's just trying to stir up trouble and is thus ruining the quality of posts on these boards. on campus means that it's usually a residency that the university runs off campus could mean a residency that's further away from the actual campus, but more likely it refers to living accommodations that you find on your own---e.g. if you see someone who has an apartment for rent and you arrange it yourself rather than go through the university to do so. usually off campus is cheaper i'd say most first year students go on campus despite the higher cost because 1) it allows you to integrate better with other first years 2) it might be easier to find your way around if you live with other students in your situation as opposed to somewhere else in a city you really don't know well usually though a lot of people choose to move off campus after their first or second year (limited residence accommodations that are usually guaranteed to first years and of course the difference in cost). if you know the city well, maybe get an off campus place with a couple of other people who you know who are going to your university. otherwise, residency on campus may be your best bet

On campus residence is pretty good for first year. It makes it easier to get involved and it's a good transition from living with your parents to living alone.

living on campus is very safe! mac has their own security staff that make sure things are running smoothly on campus. if you're studying late at the library, there's also a student walk-home team that can escort you to your res. I have never run into any trouble on campus, in terms of safety.
residence ("on-campus" living) is definitely a wonderful opportunity for first year students and I would highly recommend it! I lived in a double, dorm style room at Brandon Hall in my first year. And while I had to share a room with a stranger, and use communal washrooms, it was still a great experience. My roomie was wonderful (we're still friends to this date!) and I am still in regular contact with a lot of the friends I made on res.

I don't see how living on campus would be any less safe than living near campus at the same school. If anything it would be the opposite. The only thing I can think of is that living in a residence environment you would be more prone to pranks and petty theft than if you had your own appartment off campus; but it would be about the same as living in an off campus place with roomates. I include petty theft because people aren't always as good at locking doors in residence and even if you are, if you are in a situation where you have a roomate they may not be as good at it as you are.
