I can't decide where I want to go to school. So far my top choices are Nipissing, Laurier and Guelph. Any thoughts on which has a better program?

I have always heard that Guelph was the top school for biology. it certainly is their big draw and since they do well in the ratings it makes sense that they are the top for bio.
I have read some interesting research coming from there almost always in the area of bio.

Other good places for science might be mac, ut, western, uw, queens, and i know a few who are at ottawa for science and they like it

Sorry I didn't see you made a new thread. Go with Guelph. They are supposed to have a great science faculty. Laurier is more known for business and teaching. ...don't go to Nipissing... its like Lakehead in terms of reputation. 1 We are from Mac! 2 A little bit louder! 3 I still can't hear you! 4 more more more... Thanks for the ideas everyone. Guelph does have the better biology program...I just didn't feel like that was where I wanted to be when I went for a tour. I really liked Laurier, but I haven't heard anything positive regarding their biology program. Do you think most University's have the same quality Biology programs? It's so frustrating...such a big decision. What is Nipissing's 'reputation?' I haven't heard any cons regarding the school.

I haven't heard any cons regarding the school. i'm not really qualified to speak of nipissing that well since i've never really considered it as a school but from everything i've heard it's generally one of the lower-reputation schools (maybe because of a low cutoff? not sure why, that's just what i've heard) compared to the ones you've mentioned. laurier is definitely expanding their science program for sure and in kinesiology they're pretty good already. It's a fairly new and developing program there, whereas guelph's science program is older and has been more established. You'd probably have smaller class sizes at laurier science but i think either of the two you pick wouldn't be a bad choice.

Here I am wishing I could go to Guelph. i had a great tour and just loved the campus. But for engineering it is not the place. Then, here you are with wanting their great bio program and you got turned off. What turned you off Guelph?

I don't know. Its not that I was turned off of Guelph...mind you I didn't really like the rez, but it just didn't feel like that is where I belong. I don't know, maybe I will go for another tour. I wish someone else could just tell me where to go and make all of my decisions haha...it would be sooo much easier

Nippising gets ranked poorly by Maclean's, which tends to consider the admission averages and things like that fairly heavily. It does *very* well on things like student satisfaction - check out the NSSE Survey results that Macleans has as well on their website. There is a very strong bias on these forums towards larger schools in Southern Ontario.

Bach of Science at Ottawa seems good as well as Western or Guelph. The co-op option is the best cause you get to earn and learn.

I'm going to Guelph for microbiology. I liked the campus, and the new lab and lecture hall. Guelph is really known for it's sciences. But most universities have a decent science programe. If you did not like the school, you shouldn't go there, because you will spend 4 years of your life in a place you don't really like.
U of Guelph, microbiology, co-op
