The $675 includes water and heat. The utilities we have to pay are hydro, and then also internet and cell phones (we won't be getting cable or a home phone). It will come to $775-800 per month for bills, then we'll have another $600 to put into savings and use for entertainment, food, supplies, etc.

It seems to be pretty cheap for the area. I'm not in downtown Ottawa, but only a busride or 30 minute walk from it. That seemed to save us a lot of money, because I know of friends who are right downtown going to Ottawa University and paying $2000 for a two or three bedroom.

Are you and your girlfriend sharing a bachelor apartment? Or is it a super tiny 1br? If not, you got a great deal. You're paying about what I am for a bachelor downtown, only I'm now in year 2 so they could only increase my rent so much - they're currently advertising at $725.

On the flipside, if you seriously know someone who's paying $2000 for a 2 or 3br, they must have a pretty nice place. Like sure there's a fairly new luxury building that's practically on campus, but the fact that they charge $2000 for a 2br doesn't mean that you have to pay anywhere close to that for a 2br within walking distance, you should be able to find stuff around $1000.

Remember that it often takes just as long to do a search or two on Google to try and find the answer to your question as it takes to type it in a post here, let alone the time waiting for a reply.
If your question is "What mark does it take to get into University X", or "What are the requirements to get into University X", it's on their website and/or electronicinfo.ca (for Ontario schools). Particularly for Ontario schools, those ranges are a pretty good picture of what kind of mark will get you into the program, and if you're more than a couple percent higher it's practically guaranteed unless it requires a supplementary form.

Yeah, there is a point that you pass by finding a place so far away. I share a 4 bedroom apartment (within a house), total rent is $1620/month (was $1600 last year). No utilities included unfortunately. I estimate I pay about $500/month with rent, utilities (heat, water, sewage) + home phone (because we wanted unlimited long distance) + internet (not wireless). No cable.

But anyway my point is I live a twelve minute walk from campus and people who live any further than 5 minutes look at me like I am nuts, yet they are paying $550 - $700/month for their room. Those who live, save half an hour away from campus, however, pay between $450 and $475 (all included) and that isn't worth it to us.

It was a diamond in the rough find smile It's a one bedroom apartment, about 600-700 square feet on the other side of the Experimental Farm.

I know there's lots of other apartments around other than for $2000 a month, but to even be spending $1000 a month is a lot to come out every month.

For the record, I wasn't referring to finding a place far away to avoid spending $2000 on a 2br. I was referring to not getting a place in a building that labels itself as "Downtown Luxury" with a pool and concierge service. It just so happens that someone decided to build a luxury apartment building practically on campus, and given that it's sandwiched between campus and the Canal, it's the closest you could possibly live (including living in residence) to a few buildings on campus razz

Very true, there is a breaking point where being too far away will be a hassle. Personally, I'm off campus and a few kilometres away but I can still walk there (if needed) or bus. The cost of a bus pass or even a bike ($200-300) easily covers the extra few hundred dollars we're saving over the months.
