According to Waterloo's website, their President’s Scholarship of Distinction (entrance scholarship for Early May admission average of 95%+) includes:

$2,000 Entrance Scholarship;
$1,500 International Experience Award* or;
$1,500 Research Award*, or both

*Note: The International Experience Award and/or Research Award are available in your upper years if you choose to claim them and if you complete your first year with at least an 80% average. The International Experience Award is available only to Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

What this sounds like to me is that you really only get $2000, which is the same amount as the President’s Scholarship of $2000 for an average of 90% to 94.9%.

So...the scholarship isn't renewable (in the traditional sense) and there isn't even much of an incentive to push for a 95%+ average? Does anyone have any additional information or personal experience stories they can share with me about this scholarship?

Thanks!

You're exactly right, Waterloo scholarships suck. I was offered the President’s Scholarship of Distinction and pretty much all you get it what you outlined and you get invited to a fancy dinner with the President of the university.

lol western gives $10 000 (over 4 years) for 94+ avg. but 95 for science, which really suks because im most likely going their for science and i have a good shot at 94 avg but not 95.

ya waterloo scholarship does seem a little lame

does anyone know when all of the scholarships that are automatically awarded (the ones in the back of Macleans magazine) are actually given out????

At Western, automatic scholarships are given out in January and applied to your tuition balance. If it's over your tuition balance, they will write you a cheque.

yeah waterloo gives out the worst scholarships of the universities i applied to. I think it's because they realize their math/compsci programs will draw in more than enough people that they don't need to offer beyond bare minimum scholarships for other programs. I mean it's pretty ridiculous. the math department has scholarships in the tens of thousands, and the science department has like a 1000 one for physics only. I wish they offered better ones like uwo and ottawa (and carleton) do worry

thx, i wasnt aware of the timing, so what is a persons chance of getting one? most of the say "academic excellence" and over 85% avg. mroe than half of western has over 85% avg. so is it the luck of a draw?? since no applications are needed???

There's too many incoming students with 95%+ in UW. So you're right, it's basically a $2000 scholarship unless you can do a study/work term abroad (somewhat likely) or get a research position (not very likely).

I was wondering the exact same thing as the topic creator. Anything over 90% is pretty much the same scholarship, I believe. Of course, you might want to get a higher average for other scholarships.
