I took a year off after high school and this year I'm taking first year calculus. I pretty much forget everything I learned in Math 12 and STUPIDLY threw out all of my math notes in post-provincial exam euphoria. Do they do any review at all in first year math? Is there any way I can prepare?

There is a review of some basic calculus and stuff but it's pretty fast. I think we spent one or two days on all of the calculus I learned in high school. What program are you taking?

I'm doing a year at a community college, upgrading and getting some courses out of the way before transferring to Health Sciences at SFU. I'm thinking I might look into hiring a tutor to help refresh my memory...normally I wouldn't consider spending any more money than I have to but I want to go to dental school so my marks HAVE to be high in every course I take.

I'm not sure it may vary between schools, but my first year calculus class at McMaster we only spent three days reviewing everything we were expected to know from highschool, and then we were into the new stuff. It moved at a pretty fast past. I struggled a bit to keep up as I had taken a year off to work and do part time studies after grade 12 (which didn't include any math classes since I got all those out of the way in grade 12), so I was a bit rusty. I'd recommend finding a tutor-it might cost you a bit of money, but it will be worth it if you find yourself struggling to keep up! Even if you just do a few tutoring sessions in the first couple weeks to help refresh your memory smile

Lots of places have "Math Help Centers" or something along those lines where you can get free help. Keep that in mind!

And if you're really struggling, see what options they have - I know Acadia does a "slow" Calculus section where the material from the first semester is spread out over a year with additional review, and you can switch into it well past the regular date for switching. While it does hold things back a tad (you can't take the 2nd semester until the summer or 2nd year), it's better than failing the first semester!

Remember that it often takes just as long to do a search or two on Google to try and find the answer to your question as it takes to type it in a post here, let alone the time waiting for a reply.
If your question is "What mark does it take to get into University X", or "What are the requirements to get into University X", it's on their website and/or electronicinfo.ca (for Ontario schools). Particularly for Ontario schools, those ranges are a pretty good picture of what kind of mark will get you into the program, and if you're more than a couple percent higher it's practically guaranteed unless it requires a supplementary form.

That is why our high school teacher gave a calculus booklet for $5 to revise in last week of summer to ensure that we have forgetten anything learnt in mcb4u(old math curriculum) and i have not touched that book. I hope i do before sept. 8th.

Yes they do a quick review in university. But then again, the first 1 or 2 months of your first term calculus will be somewhat similar to highschool (except more challenging). I would recommend that you review some trig before school starts. Other then that, you should be OK.
