To type, or not to type. That is the question. Options

Hey Everyone,

I am starting to wonder about what the most effective way of taking notes would be. Writing them down, or typing them on a lap top. I can write a lot faster then i type but iam also learning to increase my typing speeds. So i should type faster by the end of the summer.

I know there have been previous threads about this but i'd like some other opinions if possible.

Thanks.

Pros of Typing:

-neater
-faster
-saves paper/less expensive
-easily copied/printed

Cons of Typing:
-distraction to other students
-may not find a power source
-prof may think you're playing games
-slower for mathematical signs, equations, math problems

Overall, I would type rather than print for humanities/english, but I would print for science/math

You also tend to learn better when writing out by hand. Goes through a different part of your brain than typing.

I agree that typing is a lot neater, faster, and more convenient. If typing is easier for you, that is. You can pay attention to the teacher and just let your fingers go.
If there's no free outlet nearby, you can depend on your laptop's battery. Mine's good for three hours, which is usually all you'll need. Unless professors expressly state it, they usually don't mind laptops.
For classes where there's lots of talking and less symbols/equations, a laptop is extremely useful.
I agree with Caesar that if you have a hard keyboard, you ought to be careful of how you type, as the noise can be distracting, yes.
I have illegible writing and can type at 110-120wpm, so a laptop's a lot easier for me. It saved my life for my Ancient Greeks course last year. ^^

It really depends on the course. Sometimes, there's classes were the prof goes way too fast and you won't be able to write fast enough so you will have to type. But there's other courses were everything is already on PowerPoint and you just add your own notes. I find that adding your own notes or explanations make it a lot easier to retain and learn information.

Generally, in most of the lecture halls/rooms at Western have an outlet that you can plug in your laptop in, so finding a power source won't be too hard.

Then it will depend on the prof and the teaching style.

Any Finance, Mathematics, or Economics courses you really wont be able to type. Anything else, typing > traditional writing

The best of both worlds!
Guaranteed you'll only be writing, but at least it's transferrable to the laptop (rather than trying to find a scanner to scan it in)
