recently i received an offer from the university of ottawa and waterloo for psychology my only problem is that i find it hard deciding what option is the best out of both of them.
at the university of ottawa i would be able to...
a) receive an $8000+ scholarship ($2000 for first year)
b) earn a psychology/linguistics joint honours degree
c) attend a campus where i don't know anyone from high school which i find quite exciting
d) the campus is very nice
at the university of ottawa i won't be able to...
a) experience co-op or earn money from it

at the university of waterloo i would be able to...
a) receive a scholarship of $1000 or less for first year entrance
b) double major in psychology and english-they have many interesting courses in both areas
c) possibly work for microsoft as arts students have the opportunity of being employed (or so i was told by a waterloo rep.)
d) attend a campus where i will know a few people in my program that are from my high school but branch off to make new friends
e) experience co-op thus gaining 1-2 years of work experience
f) earning at the minimum $30,000 which would help pay off tuition
g) the people were very kind, welcoming and supportive when i visited for open house

which one is better for psychology in your personal opinion? which one would you choose and why?

Jesus Christ that sounds awesome. If only Waterloo gave you $8000 It would be a no brainer? Then again the Co-op program give you connections in work but its 5 year rather than 4. You might want to check out Rez as well. I really can't decide those both sound wonderful. I'm a bit biased because I want to go to Waterloo.

If you're not top of the class... forget it. Yes you do have the opportunity, but you're competing with CS, SE, CE, EE etc. students.

There aren't that many arts co-op jobs available. Then again, very few arts students are enrolled in co-op.

I would say Waterloo (yes, I know, I'm biased). Coop will be so good for you. Eventhough you're going to be getting 8K from Ottawa, you won't get connections from employers there. Besides Waterloo has a better reputation that Ottawa.

While I can definitely see how MS might hire some Arts co-op students, and there might be some overlap, in general the kinds of positions the Arts people would be going for would be different than the techies. MS's operations in Canada include a lot of sales, working out contracts with Canadian companies / governments, consulting, support, etc. That being said, don't decide on going to Waterloo because someone told you you could get a co-op at Microsoft. It's true you might, but you probably won't.

Now, with that $30,000 figure - you will earn money over the summers at U of O even without co-op. You may or may not find "relevant" jobs though.

One other thing - Linguistics and English are fairly separate disciplines. And I suspect if you want Linguistics, you need to go to Ottawa over Waterloo (but I'm not sure). If you are really interested in Linguistics, go where the program is offered.

Remember that it often takes just as long to do a search or two on Google to try and find the answer to your question as it takes to type it in a post here, let alone the time waiting for a reply.
If your question is "What mark does it take to get into University X", or "What are the requirements to get into University X", it's on their website and/or electronicinfo.ca (for Ontario schools). Particularly for Ontario schools, those ranges are a pretty good picture of what kind of mark will get you into the program, and if you're more than a couple percent higher it's practically guaranteed unless it requires a supplementary form.

I've seen very few non-technical MSFT jobs on jobmine (our co-op system), and even for those jobs, 'a technical background would be a great asset'.

hey, thank you for your advice (all of you). going to waterloo just because of it's connection with microsoft isn't a reason why i even applied but rather because of the program interest. working for microsoft would be a neat experience although it wouldn't be the complete reason why i'd go there. i am personally more interested in waterloo because of co-op, the course selection they have for psych and english but i just needed some extra opinions. i don't know that much about the university of ottawa's psych program so i thought i'd ask. i appreciate everyone's opinions smile

I'd say Waterloo. {This is biased}
Everything that I read about that place is great
the success rate of getting out of debt quickly, is awesome at waterloo
and that means that you can live your life earlier
instead of dealing with debt till you are old and retired.
The 8000 is tempting though.
But all in all I would say Waterloo.
