Hi i'm going into first year UofT Life Science, and I just chose my courses today on July 28th.
My courses for this fall session are: Bio150Y, Mat135Y, Chm 139H, Psy100H1, Sociology 101Y1
I'm taking five courses already this fall, and I also want to take Astronomy 101H1F.
However, it is not offered in the Spring session, so I either have to take all of them in fall,
would it be too much for one semester?
(Btw, I'm only on the waitlist for Astronomy.)

Much Appreciated!

what about the other chem?
138 I took that one, you shoudl take that one instead of astronomy
Astronomy is meant for non science students trying to get their distribution
I'm taking BIO150Y, MAT135Y, CHM138/139H, PSY131/32H,ANT100Y

and what about that phsyics
that also meant as a distribution
I say switch now before it fills up
all of the life sci students are going to be trying to get into it

I'm taking Chm138H in Spring, and taking Chm139H1 first because I heard Chm139H1 is easier and more related to what we learned in Highschool.
We are in the same Bio class! and how do you post your timetable on here?
The reason I want to take Astronomy is because I heard it's easy, and I have a fair interest in Astronomy.
I don't think physics is easy at all, so I'm going to avoid taking it.
Does anyone know if Chm, Bio, Psychology, Math, Sociology, Astronomy all together will be to much to handle in one semester?

Thanks!!!big grin

yea I was saving 139 for the spring just incase I got tired of doing all the hard stuff I'd have something to look forward to
if that makes any sense at all
what I did was I took a screen shot of my ROSI timetable screen (alt+prntscrn buttons on your keyboard) pasted it into paint and cut out the actual timetable
pasted it in another paint file, did the same with the fall one and saved them
then uploaded it to image shack

Maybe you could take Psych during the spring term if your timetable allows it... That'd probably balance your two terms a bit more.

Actually, I found CHM138 to be easier than CHM139 despite the fact that CHM138 was completely new.

CHM138 is all about visualizing three-dimensional molecules and their stereochemistry and memorizing reaction mechanisms, so it really isn't that hard. CHM139 requires a lot more thinking to solve problems. I found CHM138 to be a lot more enjoyable too, plus you do cool stuff in the labs like recrystallization. My organic chemistry mark was A+ while my physical chemistry mark was A- because of that.

I'm sure you could handle 6 courses in one semester. Engineers do it. So can you.

Gevanni, unfortunately my timetable does not allow that. Thanks for your suggestion though.
Now i'm getting different opinions about the difficulty of CHM138 vs CHM139, since I'm taking both, would it matter which one's first which second?

It's better to take CHM139 first (even though I found it harder) because:

- It overlaps with a lot of high school material. In CHM139, you learn about stuff like stochiometry, quantum atomic theory, ideal gas laws, acid/base equilbrium, electrochemistry, entropy/enthalpy, rate law, etc.. which I'm sure you've covered during high school. Of course, it difficulty of CHM139 is higher than high school because the test questions goes a bit more indepth and there is a lot more new material added in like molality, unit cells, osmotic pressure, etc. In CHM138, pretty much everything is new.

- Concepts in CHM139 will better prepare you for CHM138. Take a look at the 2nd FAQ questions on the human bio FAQ: http://www.hmb.utoronto.ca/faqs.asp

- Browning is teaching organic chem during the spring. That's reason enough to take CHM138 second! razz

Good to know that I've made the right move.

By the way, the wait list for Prof. Lam's MAT135Y1 is insane, I heard he's amazing.
I can't get into his class, and I'm to scared to give up on the one I've enrolled. (sigh)

Thanks for the help guysbatman

Ok, I got a little offtopic.
So anyone has a suggestion to the original post? (Too many courses for one semester?)

I will be taking 6 courses in first semester.
and my timetable does not allow me to change any of the courses to second semester.

The courses are:
CHM139H1F
BIO150Y1
MAT135Y1
AST101H1F
PSY100H1F
SOC101Y1Y

IMO
drop the astronomy or the physics
or both and maybe get your second distribution?

and when I saw that Lam's Calc was full
I was so pissed, and it had a waiting list
when all of the others had openings
stupid 2:15 start time... should have joined an FLC

At U of T, only Engineering Science takes more than 2.5 credits per session. A friend of mine at UNB took more than 5 classes per session but some of them were worth less than .5 credits and were really easy.

You can always take Astronomy in a later year if you want. I wouldn't suggest overloading in your first semester of university.

Remember that it often takes just as long to do a search or two on Google to try and find the answer to your question as it takes to type it in a post here, let alone the time waiting for a reply.
If your question is "What mark does it take to get into University X", or "What are the requirements to get into University X", it's on their website and/or electronicinfo.ca (for Ontario schools). Particularly for Ontario schools, those ranges are a pretty good picture of what kind of mark will get you into the program, and if you're more than a couple percent higher it's practically guaranteed unless it requires a supplementary form.

Yes, I agree - don't overload yourself. First semester is going to be challenging enough without taking an extra course.

At U of A we almost always take at least 6 courses a semester. Although I wouldn't recommend it if you don't have to.
