Hi I just finished Grade 11; I'm an IB student and plan to go into a life sci or health sci program for university. One of the programs I am very interested in is Health Science at McMaster (I know, I know, BIG surprise right..). Since I am in the IB program, we can only take 2 sciences in school- I took biology and chemistry. My average is in the mid to high 90s so the cutoff shouldn't be a problem as long as I can maintain my marks through next year. Based on the courses I'm taking, I will get the following grade 12 university credits:

biology
chemistry
all 3 maths
economics
french
english

As you cna see, I cover the prerequisites for the Health Sciences program. However, as I said, I can not take my 3rd science in school. Last summer i got my credit for Grade 11 Physics, but because I am working full time this summer I'm not able to do the Grade 12 course. I know that we take physics in the Health Science program, but I thinkt here is an intorduction to physics course which I can take which covers most grade 12 material to get me up to speed, is there not?

My main question is, do you think that not having physics would at all affect my chances of gaining admission to the program. I have a solid extra-curricular portfolio and my marks are high, plus I will take time to write an effective supplementary application. From what I understand, they want well rounded students, not people who are JUST good at math and science right? Would my lack of a grade 12 physics credit really hurt my chances at admission? I can still take the course in night school or online during first semester if I decide I REALLY want the credit, but I don't know how that would impact my marks in my other courses. I guess if I put my mind to it I would be able to juggle it all, but I wouldn't want to undertake somethign liek that unless I'm sure it is actually worth it and I will actually gain somethign by having that physics credit!

Thanks in advance!!

As long as you have the prereqs I don't think it will be a problem. You can take that intro physics course in uni anyways to catch up.

The BHSc program at McMaster doesn't require you to take Physics in any years of the program...

Mr Sparkle - If Mac Health Sciences does not have any Physics in any of the years - do you recommend taking it as an Optional - would it be required / preferred for MCAT - is there a physics component in MCAT or is Physics a requirement in other Med schools such as Queens , U of T etc

I'm not Mr. Sparkle, but I can probably answer this question just as well as he (or she... you never know) can. There is a physics component on the MCAT; however, most, essentially all, people study for the MCAT using either a course or a study guide (or both). Taking physics only in high school or first year of university will only very minimally help you in the MCAT course or in using the MCAT study guide. I hesitate to use absolutist terms, but taking physics in school should not help you at all on the MCAT (if you have taken the course or used the study guide; and that is true only if you don't take physics the semester before studying for the MCAT). It may make the course or the study guide easier to understand and thus it will take less time to study, but you can only know something so well. I would, however, take physics because it is a requirement for some medical schools (maybe not the ones you plan on applying to in Canada, but most definitely it is required by some of the American, European, and Caribbean schools that you might apply to as "back-ups"). It is also required by a lot of programs that you might use as back-ups, e.g. pharmacy, dentistry, graduate school. One word of advice: do not assume you are going to make it into medical school. The number of people who think they can get into medical school (>>>> the number of people who are actually the least bit CAPABLE of getting into medical school) >>>>> the number of people who actually get into medical school.

Really appreciate your guidance on this - I have just started Grade 12 (although I have finished 3 Grade 12 Math and Science courses in Grade 11 with a high Nineties average) - I do have Physics scheduled for next term and it is one of my strong subjects - I was trying to figure out which program (Mac BHSc or Queens Life Sciences) is better suited for me - eg backups if you do not make it to Med school etc and want to go into Pharmacy / Optometry etc - so IF (and a big if at that) I do have a choice to make between Mac BHsc and Queens Life Sciences I want to make a well-informed decision.

I know Mr. Sparkle personally, and I can tell you that he did the same: we had a lot of the same science classes in high school (even though he is a year younger than me). It worked for him. Of course, he also had a lot of extracurriculars, and I'm sure his supplementary app was nothing less than stellar. Work on those two too, and you should be fine.

Both of those programs are awesome. Mac health sci is much more than your usual science program, and Queen's life sci is a good program at an awesome school. You can't go wrong with either. I think I'd go with Mac health sci, but you might have some difficulty completing all the prereqs for some pharmacy schools (it might just be that you'll have to spend a lot of your electives on pharmacy school requirements). That being said, I'm sure it is not uncommon for Mac HS students to apply to pharmacy... they must do it somehow.
