I've been asking people from other schools about enrichment programs, and I can't believe how many programs that are out there that I've never heard of. I wish I knew about some of these earlier so I wouldn't have missed the deadline. Anyone want to share? Here are some of mine (although you have probably heard of all of them already) : BioTrek, U of T's Mini-Med program, and Shad Valley.

Well... what were your experiences? Are they mostly fun, or are they rather education? Too bad Deep and Shad Valley costs a lot.

I'm going to SUNIA this summer...
got into Shad but I forgot to mail my bursary form so it ended up WAY too expensive...
sad thing is that if I mailed it I probably would have gotten the bursary because both my rents are in grad school right now so we're a bit on the lower-income side... lol.

i really regret not doing shad. i never knew about the bursaries, looked at the several thousand dollars it costed and never even applied. i've missed out on a few really valuable experiences because of finances, which really sucks. i also did the unlimited program at uw. it was pretty interesting, and cost like 200$ so it was economical enough to fit into my very limited budget

Shad is so expensive (and everything else over $500)! But about the waterloo unlimited, doesn't it cost also cost like $500 with residence? I wish I could go to some of them too, but instead, my parents tell me I should be making money instead, not spending money lol

Shad is worth it. Sure the cost is high, but a) you might get an internship and b) it'll pay off in the end- SO MANY contacts and new relationships come out of it. Seriously, if your parents don't want you to go b/c of the cost, get someone you know who is a Shad alum to talk to them.

Also, many high-level competition programs half expect you have participated in Shad or DEEP or something like that (esp. in the US).

Oh, of course that's not what I'm implying! Just saying that there's some level of expectation for you to have done Shad if you're a high high achiever (for example, MIT says that they regard highly Canadians who have done Shad- so they'd pick a Shad over a non-Shad with similar other credentials). Volunteering for Sci-Camp is good too, but those two things aren't comparable since one is a participating in a program and the other is giving back to the community.

Brock U. has a science enrichment program for grade 11 girls. It's three days long (I think). A couple of my friends went.
