I know the standard practice at the bookstore at Acadia was to buy at 50% and sell at 75%; so if buying directly from someone I'd offer around 60%.

buy online.. you'll get it for like 10% of the regular price lol

Abebooks.com or ebay. They're the actual version of the textbooks but just the international edition or something and it's super cheap.

I would never do that.. they mark up sooo much. But if you're buying online the only bad thing is you'll have to wait about a week or two before the books get to you. For most people it's not a problem but some people like to have their books first day so that won't do.

I personally bought 80% of my 2nd year books online, they were $140-$200 each in the bookstore, I bought them for about $20-$40 online! They were the exact same book, just softcover and it said international edition. I think the publishers sell these to poorer countries for very cheap since they can't afford it, and they in turn sell it back to us to make profit! Woohoo! Talk about a global economy.

some of my books came the next week, some the week after. Just depends on the seller. You can probably pay like $10 more for express shipping if they offer it and get it in like 2-3 days. But trust me you probably won't even open your books until the 2nd week anyways!

But all of this depends on the seller as each has their own policy

I'm really excited to get my textbooks online (ok, I just like getting things in the mail). Bijanv, when you got your books, you said you got 80% online. Where did you get the other 20% and why? Is it availability or did you just need it right away?

Will you know the textbook requirements for any of your courses before class actually starts? I know most people are saying that textbooks are supplementary rather than dead on necessity, but I'm concerned mostly for my calculus class about the textbook. But I bet I can wait a week or so if I can save so much money!

Sometimes it's best to wait to get your textbooks. The professor might tell you what editions you can use (for example, you might be able to use an older edition) or you might not really need it at all. I personally never used my textbooks in the first couple weeks of classes, and in certain classes I never used it at all (and still got a 3.9 GPA).

And Pinku, in my calculus class I rarely used my textbook, only to bring it to labs (which were like quizzes) because my TA was too lazy to write the questions on the board.
