I'm still in Gr.11 and basically trying to figure out potential career paths for myself. I had made a previous topic on here regarding Med School, which I still consider a potential path, but realize that not everyone who wants to become a doctor, and even has the marks can become one just like that. razz

My question is this - what are prestigious programs to apply to if I am interested in later applying to Vet school (pretend I didn't mention anything about Med)? Also, what kind of marks are expected from these programs, and how competitive are they? Lastly, is Vet school relatively easier to get into than Med school?

Thanks guys.

If you live in Ontario you must go to Guelph for vet school (residency rules). It's very tough to get into but easier than med school.

You only seem interested in prestige and not really interested in being a vet.

Go look at the requirements for vet on the OVC site. They even have median marks and MCAT scores.

I'm going to disagree with that, at least generally speaking in Western Canada. It depends on your province though, as I'm pretty sure that you have to go to vet school in your home province or nearest one usually (ex Alberta students must go to U of S in Saskatoon.

Even for the Western Canadian candidates it is still not as hard to get into vet school as the applicants are way lower for vet school. it is not a walk in the park though.

Alright, thanks for all of the information guys.

As far as programs pre-veterinary school go, I was wondering what the 'top' few relevant programs would be. I assume Life Sciences would definately be something to consider, but would Health Sciences(@McMaster, granted I get lucky) qualify? What schools should I consider?

I've only heard not-so-great things about UofT so I don't think I would be considering that unless someone wants to enlighten me on those rumours. razz

If you want to get into vet school, going to Guelph for your undergrad is probably a good choice since the OVC is across the road and the university itself has a focus on biological sciences. Guelph also has a joint program for those who are unsure if they want to go to med school or vet school and I've placed the link for more info on that below. Hope this helps, and good luck, whatever you decide!

Forget "top" programs - if you want vet go to Guelph.

I never understand this need for "top" in undergrad.

I'm fairly certain the vet school is even more competitive than med school since there is only 4 or 5 schools across Canada.
