I messaged a girl on facebook, who went to the same school as me (HS). I told her I was in Engineering, she didn't even reply back. Mind you, she replied to a message before that. So, I didn't get a "whoa, you are smart" but rather instead a "...".

No I love engineering and will continue it or be in a field related to it for the rest of my life (not sure to say hopefully or not lol) but I just don't think I'd be living in Canada until standards become better for engineers here (and although I hate living in the states, I don't think I have much of a choice if I want a decent life with good pay)

My first year cGPA was 3.45 (first semester 3.28, second 3.62).
The average in every course is usually a C, or sometimes a C+.
After engineering, I hope to get into medical school, so I'm hoping to pull up my marks second and third year (darn statics and dynamics!!)

Yeah, the course averages were always C or C+. First year I got one C, one B, one B- and the rest were A- or A.

I don't know about you but 70-100K is not a bad salary at all.
I just finished first year engineering at U of A. I thought it was easier than high school, because I was actually interested in all the courses I was taking and I had more free time. I got a 3.9 GPA and I was playing varsity rugby. I always had time to hang out with my boyfriend and friends and it wasn't horribly stressful.
I took Psych as my elective and found it really easy plus it was interesting. It depends on what you like. A lot of my friends took Econ which I would never take because I find that stuff boring as hell.

No it's not "bad" as if you have a second income from your spouse you will be rather well off. HOWEVER when you see other professions such as teachers and others who go through maybe 1/4 of the stress and workload as engineers do making the same or just about the same salary as you... it's really not worth it!
Also if you look at the history of pay for engineers within Canada, salaries have only increased about 5-10% from 12 YEARS AGO ! With standard inflation they should have increased nearly 25% but most salaries are staying exactly where they are and it doesn't look like they'll be changing anytime soon.

I don't know of any teachers who make that much money.
Maybe you should be an engineer in Alberta. We get paid really well out here. Haha.

Well I know my high school teachers who had masters degrees were getting paid nearly 80,000 + they got 2 months fully off which if they worked we could've said they would be up to nearly 90! Also too bad there are no major tech companies in Alberta otherwise I would've considered it haha but I think the cost of living there now kind of offsets the increase in pay which kind of sucks

I think that's an exception. Most teachers are not in it for the money. They get mediocre salaries and work incredibly hard. Not only do they teach all day, then there is all the marking and supplementary things they do. And then many also coach sports teams, are teacher advisors for clubs, etc. They work long, long hours and don't get paid well at all. These are the statistics on teacher salaries across the country: http://resource.educationcanada.com/salaries.html

$80,000 is at the upper end of the teacher pay scale right now (i.e. to go higher you'd need to move into administration); Engineering has more options available to go beyond that. And raises as a teacher are for the most part based on the union contract saying that every year you go up by $x, whereas engineering is more merit based. The same thing applies for layoffs - layoffs of teachers are entirely seniority based. Layoffs of engineers are usually at least somewhat merit based. And then try getting a job as a teacher right now. Enrollments are declining in many school boards, and it's not just that they aren't replacing the people who retire, they are actually having to lay people off. Starting salaries aren't amazing, and even 5 years ago you had to spend some time working substitute and/or part time before actually getting a full time job. Windsor Catholic board cutting 105 teaching positions, maybe only half that will be laid off due to retirments/attrition. Toronto Catholic board cutting up to 85 teaching positionsKawartha laying off about 40I was at a thing the other day with someone whose wife is a high school teacher; her school was losing 9 teachers. And it's the teachers who have been on the job a couple years after some time spent subbing or part time who are the first to lose their jobs, as it's all seniority based.

Sorry didn't mean to stick to teachers, just using it as an example for the point I was trying to make

Yes, in first year for my 'intro to the engineering profession' class. The essay was a joke, something about considering the impact of technology on the community. Although you usually have to take english and will have to write essays in that class.

No but had to write a stupid letter... and in second term, had to write a FDS - final design specification for a engineering design project.... I had a bad group and it wasn't a fun class, but i luckily ended up with an A-

Thankfully, my APS112 group was not too horrible, but my APS111 group was pretty bad. The worst part was the insane multiple choice tests.
