When you actually do course selection online, you don't have to type in the section. Just search the course code, choose the timeslot that is convenient for you, and that timeslot becomes your section. This is automatically filled in for you by Webadvisor. Also, in case you didn't know, startonline.ca has begun, so if you have any more Guelph related questions, you'll get a much faster reply there.
As for an elective, I know a lot of science students take ECON1050, but really you can take whatever arts/social science course you want. Feel free to pick up a language, take a visual arts course, maybe some psychology or philosophy. Whatever interests you. Also keep in mind that your arts credit does not have to be a first year class, so even though the course calandar says to take one first semester, you can wait if there's a 2nd or 3rd year course you really want to take. (I recommend PHIL2070-Environmental Ethics... a lot of science students took it... but watch your average. You'll never learn so much yet get a poorer grade). Watch for prerequisites for upper year arts courses though.
