Dear members of the OSASGFC,
What do you think of Studio Ghibli's recent trend of adapting English novels/stories into films? I'm thinking, specifically, of Tales from Earthsea, Howl's Moving Castle, and soon, The Borrower Arrietty (coming this year!).

I think that it doesn't appear to be a good thing either for fans of Ghibli, or fans of the book. Generally the best Ghibli work is either original (Laputa, Totoro) or so heavily modified on a domestic property that it is practically original (Kiki, Whisper). Tales is probably one of my least favourite of the collection. Howl was better, but nowhere near the classic status of their top work. Adaptation of foreign properties just doesn't seem to be their strength. Plus, they modify the originals in such a way that I don't think fans of the original are clamoring in support for it either.
In short - less adaptations, more originals plz.

Hmm....that would probably go to Whisper, Princess Mononoke, then Totoro.
