i'm excited for prom, but i'm so glad i didn't go all out and spend tons of money getting ready for it.
free jewelery, $15 shoes and a $20 clutch, plus hair is all i had to pay for , which will make the night SO much more enjoyable. the big deal is the after party anyways, and none of us will even be dressed up!
GO CHEAP OR GO HOME!cheers

dress $248, hair $60, makeup $75, shoes $90, purse $35, necklace $112
:S
i try not to think about it to avoid the guilt.
in my defence we get to take home $50 worth of cosmetics with the makeup thing.
and i will be def working my butt off this summer.

Birthday suit, maybe? It would be a popular choice, assuming decent physique big grin

I'm not going to prom this year. I recently changed school and in Quebec, you finish high school in gr11. so since i just moved, i don't really feel so close to the people in my class. I would rather attend my old school's prom next year. where my friends from my old school will be graduating. now that would be a really fun prom for me.

Last year, my boyfriend spent around 300$ on prom. that includes: suit, tie(well actually, that was a gift from his mom),corsage, limo and 2 tickets. I think a friend of his has connections with a limo compagny since i remember it being late and she called her dad to ask him about it. and we booked 2 limo and there was at least 20 of us so the price was cheaper in the end. I spent 130$ for his prom. that includes dress(Le chateau, 100$) and shoes. i did my own hair and make-up(hahaha good thing my skin was still clear then, no need for foundation and all those stuff). I also got the chance to wear the dress again at my uncle's wedding. So yeah, i bought the dress for a decent price and chose one that i could also wear to a wedding. smile

I definitely think Prom is overrated, I mean its just one night and people freak out over it from the begining of the year! Well, actually my school isn't going to have a prom so I wouldn't know. I'm judging my answer based on movies, but you know how the media is.albino

on a somewhat similar note. while prom may be expensive- depending on how u use your money-, in the end its meant to be a fun way of celebrating that u've wasted 5 yrs of ur life studying subjects u may or may not like.
So have fund, screw the money b/c this is one event u'll remember for a while so y not have fun if u can! i've spent 600 so far on everything and had to save my work money to get that, i have not moneu left frown but i totally dont regret anything

Prom is DEFINITELY overrated. I went to prom last year(I was in grade 11), and it's really nothing special. What sucks is that I'm head of Prom Committee this year, so I feel like I'm lying to everyone when I'm selling tickets. Though it is overrated, it's still an experience people should have! I thankfully, am not spending much on prom smile

Dress - 85(50 was for alteration)

I think prom is a bit overrated. I just went to my boyfriend's prom last Friday, and it seemed to me just like one huge contest. The girl that made the student slideshow showed pictures of her friends and no-one else, the teachers pleaded with the students for a drama free prom, I hear d one girl say that another had tried to sabotage her dress, and I know I saw at least one girl run out crying. It seems a bit of a shame really. I'm holding against all hope that my prom is not like that. I'll just wait and see...

I believe that all graduating high school students should go to their prom...but yes, perhaps it has gone a bit overboard lately with the preparation. Girls are buy unecessarily overpriced dresses and renting hummer stretches and whatnot...but is it really necessary?? what does it prove if you show up to prom in a better ride than someone else? People are forgetting what prom is all about...its about sharing your last high school moments with all your friends, not trying to compare who has a better/more expensive dress.

As for people who say buying a super expensive dress is like buying a rolex or something.....well...theres a difference. If you buy a rolex or a ferrari, it has a practical purpose...you get to use it on a regular basis and show it off at the same time. If you buy an over-priced prom dress, you may use it for one night in your whole life and have some pictures. After the night of prom, you dont really get any chances to show it off any more, nor would you get the opportunity to wear it.

Sorry if what i wrote was really confusing lol ... but my point is prom shouldnt be as materialistic as it is right now.

the money spent on prom is equivalent to the fees one must pay now for university.

Im still undecided..60 bucks good for prom? I dont see the big deal but everyone i kno is telling me that prom is a one time thing..

i found an eBay store that literally takes your measurements and makes the dress for you, once you choose which dress you want.
Mine cost $50, and fits like a dream. (I also had to pay shipping and handling as well as taxes at the bored, making the dress cost around $100..still not bad!) Also, my brother bought it for me razz
And honestly, my shoes cost more than my dress... $140! But they're absolutely GORGEOUS so I'm not complaining.

Aaand I'm gonna be buying my clutch soon, as soon as I find one that is just right.

I'm paying around $250 in total for prom, not bad at all.

Ah yes, I remember a time when I too was that naive. Yes, of course I agree, how can anyone argue with such idealism as

But the truth is, voicing your opinion on this forum really isn't going to help. In fact, is there any point at all in attempting to change the "materialism" of prom?
I would think there are bigger issues out there. So, let the "people" get drunk and spend ridiculous amounts of money, there are better battles out there.
